I am still working on getting this PTO shaft going for my rototiller!! If I can get this u-joint out, I think I will have it licked.... but how does it come out?? I have pounded it through from one side so that the cup on the left is free and clear of the yoke (left side). But, it looks like the u-joint has run out of room and the crossmember part of it is up against the right side of the yoke. The cup on the right side is still firmly embedded in the yoke so I can't "wiggle" the u-joint any to make room to pull the other cup off. What now??? Surely there has to be a way to get this thing out of there to replace it whenever it goes bad?? Do you just grab the right side cup where it's sticking out with some pliers and try to work it out??? I was hoping to re-use this u-joint so want to avoid that if possible.

There is nothing wrong with the u-joint or the shaft, I just need to get the shaft laying to the right of it attached to the slipclutch, so that my PTO shaft will be longer. The shaft that is on it now was cut too short, and the two sections will separate if you run it like this. Btw, the u-joint came out of that longer shaft easy.

Anyway, that's why I'm trying to swap these two pieces. Does that u-joint have to be cut out with a saw???? That's about the only way I can see it coming out of there. This slipclutch is the standard PTO shaft that comes with a KKII rototiller, if that helps any (Italian made??). The other piece I'm trying to graft onto it is a Walterscheid shaft. I measured the cup OD diameters and they are both 1.06" inches, so it *should* work.

I'm looking at the picture so left and right is from that view. Can your move the loose piece left, leaving the cup in place while you do so and then when fully left pop out the right side. This will leave the right cup in place, but you can then drive it out.

I would try to carefully pull out the cup that is extended then drive the joint to the other side and do the same.. Try to save it if you can.

the other thought depending on how much more length you need would be a pto extension adaptor.

Not sure I fully understand your reply, but I cannot remove (or move) the cup on the left side because there isn't enough free space (yet). The right side cup is still about half in the yoke, this won't let the crossmember piece move (or wiggle side to side) any at all.

After pondering on this some more, I can now see that if I were to drive the left side cup back into it's original place by pounding on the slipclutch (and NOT the right side cup) that would spread the two cups apart. Would that be enough to free the crossmember so you could angle it, which may be enough to let the crossmember drop out from between the two cups (with them spread apart)??

did you look at the video?.. You remove one of the end caps after you have driven it almost all the way out with a pair of pliers.

Actually I did, after I got through typing my long winded 2nd response. So, I didn't see your reply until after I refreshed the screen. It helped some, and believe it or not I had already watched one video on utube about changing u-joints, just not the one you linked. The one you linked was a lot better than the one I saw.

I just went down into the garage and tried grabbing the right side cup with my biggest channel locks and couldn't seem to budge it. I soaked it with pb blaster and will try it again tomorrow. Thanks for the help!

This is part of the problem, I already have a 4" PTO extension on the other end, on the PTO output shaft. This was necessary to make up for the pats easy change that I have on the lower links, they move the attachment about 4" further away from the tractor.

The PTO shaft on this rototiller was cut by a young kid for an 8N tractor he had, and I don't think he really knew the proper way to shorten one.

Ignore my "helpful" advice, I didn't realize the left cup was still attached. I looked at the King Kutter site...they don't show a replacement u-joint and that might be a bad sign. I'd call the company in the morning and ask for some technical help with this.

Check back in when you figure it out...I've got one of these and I'm sure to break it someday...Don't want to spend $300 for a new unit if I can avoid it.

You can double check me on this, but I think a new PTO shaft with slipclutch from TSC is $219 without tax. I was hoping to avoid that too!
