I don't know much about tractors but have an 881 to which I just attached a 1 arm loader. I can see that one of the levers on the AICO 2 spool hydraulic unit is broken where it attaches to the ram - comparing with the other handle it looks like a threaded fitting that has broken off that looks like a grease nipple but is solid. I'm trying to get what's left of the old fitting out now - I took the other handle to the local John Deere dealer but they don't have anything other than a grease fitting that might fit the hole...does anyone know where I might find that fitting?

The end of the ram has also broken off....can anyone suggest a way to repair it or make it work when I get the lever repaired?

I sent an email to TISCO and just got their reply - they said they don't have individual parts available and a kit would cost $675 - I don't have that kind of $ to spend so am looking for any other solution. I've attached a picture that I hope will show the problem - any help or suggestions would be appreciated. thanks. bryan

Welcome to TBN:D

Send a PM to user "soundguy" as he knows these old loaders/valves/tractors very well.
From your picture it looks like the end of the spool is broken off?

yep.. spool is busted.

you might be able to disassemble it, then have a welder tack a new piece of flat to the front then redrill it, then make a new handle.. that or just buy a used valve online. ford single valves go for about 150$ used, and about 300$ for a dual. roughly 2.5x that for new tisco units.

those bolt right to the top cover.. very common valve used from 53 righ on up into the late 70's for sure.

then 1-arm 711 and 722 loaders are neat.. I have 5 of them in operation and a spare waiting for a tractor... brackets are always a trick to find too.

thanks very much for the great info. I removed the levers and was happy to discover that it wasn't a cast part that was broken off the lever, just some sort of fitting that screws in place - looks like a grease nipple but solid, if it's the same as on the other lever. I was able to remove what was left and have clean threads and a solid lever now - wasn't able to find a similar fitting but screwed in a bolt and found it works OK to push the broken spool-end with the correct leverage and that already has made a big big difference.

I had tried switching the loader hose to the other spool but nothing happened when I moved that lever to any effect, though it does travel in and out OK - not sure what that means. I find that I can use the broken lever now to raise the bucket, and if I push on the other lever (down) the effect is that the bucket lowers. So I can make it work but could use a couple of other hands......I think I'll wait until I have more $ to try to repair the spool end (if that's what you call it). will try to get some experience with it first to see how useful it turns out to be....moved a little dirt with it yesterday before it rained and already saved my back some pain....for sure. it's really a creative idea......

thanks for the help....

sounds like the part that broke was just a screw in ball pivot.. you can still get those.

also.. one spool may be DA, the other may be sA. so you have to make sure you hooked up the correct port..

could you recommend a source for the ball pivot? what does DA and SA mean and how can I determine what I have? Nothing seems to happen if I hook up to the spool without the broken handle. thanks for the patience and education....

Da is double acting

SA is single acting.

a valve that is DA has 2 lines on it, lever one way extends the cyl, lever the other way retracts the cyl.

a valve that is SA has 1 line.. lever one way extends the cyl, the other way allows the cyl to exhaust under gravity pressure.

Many DA valves can be adjusted to work as SA by turning a 'bolt' or control, or changing out a sleave ont he side of the valve.

many times on these old ford valves and the tisco replacements, there are 2 valves, one DA, and hte other swapable between DA and SA.

an SA valve is for running a trip loader.. or a lift axle on a batwing or disc.. etc. IE.. something that will relaxe under gravity pressure when you exhaust the oil.

DA valves are good for a hyd loader bucket.. IE.. dump and curl.

as for the pivot.. imagine a solid zerk fitting.. .. but a hair longer and a round ball instead of the actual fitting. I was looking inthe ytparts section the other day and noticed one.. but for the life of me can't find it now! I've seen em made from a bolt that someone took a grinder and file to to 'make it work'

thanks, that helps a lot. I'll try to get a grip on the broken cylinder and see if anything happens when/if I pull it out. If yes, it seems like a good idea to find a way to get it fixed through one of the ways you've suggested. thanks again.
