Yes it’s yet another 'what should I buy?' question. My home is on 10 acres in central Virginia, but I also have 130 acres 600 miles north in New York. It’s been hard enough convincing my wife (that’s were the jewelry comes in) we need one tractor so a second machine is not in the immediate future. The machine I buy will have to serve at both places so it will have to be trailered. The tow vehicle is a 2500HD pickup, which will realistically tow 5 tons. Subtracting 3000 pounds for the trailer, my tractor and implements will have to weigh less than 7000 pounds.

Our VA property was clear cut six years ago, and the property is littered logs and large limbs with lots of 1’ to 2’ stumps. There is a 1 acre area that we want to convert into a pond with some excavation and building an earthen dam. With the contours of the site, I estimate its about 450 yards of dirt to dig and move for the pond. My hunting club has nearby property that needs brush cutting and food plot management. There are all the usual chores moving and spreading mulch/compost/sand/gravel/etc, road and trail maintenance, snow removal and a medium sized vegetable garden to be done. We have garden tractors at home and at the cabin to handle finish mowing and the smaller gardening chores.

At our vacation property we have several small fields to rough cut each year, I let them grow 5 to 7 years between cuttings. ~80 acres are forested and I have a lot of downed 60’ to 80’ balsams forming tangles that need clearing. The semi-annual privy relocation would be a lot easier with a backhoe and a set of pallet forks. There’s a couple of miles of roads, 300 feet of river bank two creeks and food plots to maintain on top of the rest.

I have plenty of time in Virginia, but when at the cabin I want to do the chores quickly. To accomplish my goals I think I need a tractor somewhere between 20 and 40 hp with a FEL, BH, 2 button plow and 5’ or 6’ rotary cutter/box blade/disc. Are my expectations reasonable? My budget for all this is $25k, it would have been substantially more but my wife can identify cubic zirconia at 5 yards.

I'd say start by sharpening your pencil and narrow down your HP range. 20 to 40 is a pretty big range of HP, and you'll find there is a huge difference in prices given that range.

Also from reading quickly I'd think about the following...

How often would you be using the BH and would you be doing the stumping with it? If so you want to go to a sub-frame unit... usually a little larger... and of course more $$.

It sounds like you'll be doing a lot of cutting, which means a lot of mount and dismount of the BH. If you could drop the BH from the equation you'd be knocking a bunch O'cash off the total price.

Smarter folks than me will chime in here - My impression is that you would be very underpowered looking in the 20hp range. $25,000 is certainly a "doable" price - but that BH will eat anywhere from $5000 to $7000 of it...

Have you narrowed it down to any particular brands? If so I'd make sure there is some sort of dealer representation at both sites.

Good Luck - I hope you can post more specifics as you narrow down the search. And really... nothin says "I Love You" like a good Walmart ring.

First off, forget doing the pond with a compact tractor. Life's too short.

Second - you really do need two tractors. I'd get an old 2WD utility 60+HP with 7-10' cutter & FEL for the vacation property.

I'd say you want to be on the 40HP side of your range.

Not sure you have the same terrain at your New York site as we do here in the Hudson Valley, but if you have lots of rocks I'd recommend the biggest thing you can handle.

I started looking at the Kubota B2910 and ended up with the L3130/723 Loader/BH-90 backhoe. I still yearn for something bigger on some of the monster rocks, but this is about as far as I wanted to go price and size wise.

PS.. It would get you under the 5 ton margin and the price of the total package is right in line.

You might also check out your local rental outlets.. not just at the rental rates, sometimes they have L35s and L48s for sale at pretty good prices..

Kind of a hard one to guess at, i would say that the used market place is going to be you're best bet for sure, think about buying a used escavator/back hoe for building the pond and clearing stumps then SELL it and re-coup some $ for the tractor purchace, or else get a tractor first for the maintenance needs. 40HP I would say min, better off with more, if you intend to pull with the CK then you may be in some difficulites, maybe an old CUT used for the vacation property and same for impliments, you can't haul it all around each time, just not wise.

anyhow just my 2 cents worth.

Mark, to what are you referring here? The CK? I didn't see any mention of a CK in this post. Maybe it means something else? John

Welcome to TBN!

Don't forget the trailer /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

For 30hp-38hp range figure a 6' wide (min, 6.5' better) x 16' (min, realistically 18' with implement). Larger, or more creative loading, if you want to carry multiple implements. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Figure you'll be towing about 4000lbs tractor, and another 1000-1500lbs for implements. Add backhoe weight, too.

Do you really want to haul that much that distance (oh, and about $30k of your hard earned dollars)? Make sure you have very good insurance, and don't travel during any high traffic dates/time ( vacation home) or you'll be pulling your hair out and add significantly to your travel time. Vacations are for relieving stress, not adding to it /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

You may really want to look into alternatives, such as an additional or older/used tractor for the second location. Or maybe you know a neighbor or farmer nearby that has equipment? Even renting for those short vacation trips?

Without a backhoe, check my signature line for my implements on the Mahindra, a little under $25k is reasonable. My trailer is 6'x16' and it would be easier with 6.5' x 18' I make do, but I load and unload, and strap very carefully /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

What are your thoughts about this? Any of these suggestions seem okay, or do you need the name and number of a jeweler twice as good? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Is a 2500HD a CK? I never heard of that. It's a Chevy right, but where does the CK come in? I haven't looked for a truck for many years as our F150 is still going strong with only 33,000 miles. John

John, it's a bit confusing to me, also. In Chevy trucks, a "C" is a 2WD and a "K" is a 4WD but I haven't seen them used together as CK.
