Hello all,
Well we finally got our house outside of town sold, so we will soon be moving to our rural 52 acres. I need to build a barn, and I think I want to build a metal building. Keep in mind I am pretty mechanically inclined, and an electrician by trade, but I have never built a building of any sort. I am wanting a 40x60x16 so I should be set for life. :D

A company named Armstrong Steel (which has been very helpful and seems like a great company) quoted me a price of $16,800 for just the building, no concrete or door or insulation. That is delivered, and I will build it with help, or hire it done. It has 2:12 roof, 26GA, all american made steel, all screws/fastners/bolts are surgical stainless. 50 year warranty on everything. We never get snow that isn't a factor.

Is this price good? My inlaws own a concrete constuction company so I should come out okay there, I know the big I-beams will need some pretty good size footers, so I figure the concrete and work will still be expensive. I figured at least $3500 for the concrete with no labor. I priced insulation fiberglass (WMP-VR-R) 2" in the walls and 4" in the ceiling for $2400, two 12x10 doors are $1240 total and one 12x14 door is $800. They said they would beat any prices I found on insulation and doors, that is just what I found so far.

how do these prices sound? Anything else I should be aware of or on the lookout for? Anyone else you can recommend?

Building material delivered $16,800
Doors- around 2000ish
concrete 3500ish no labor
insulation- 2400ish
So far that will be close to 25,000 not counting concrete labor or putting it up. How does that sound? Any help will be much apprecitated as I know very little about building a metal building.

The price doesn't sound too bad, but you do need to include any labor that you have to farm out. You also need to add in your electric costs, panel, outlets, lights you know the drill. You didn't mention anything about windows, don't forget them.

Will the building have any overhang on the roof? It is nice not having the snow or rain run off right next to the foundation. These are all extras that start to add up. You may still be getting a good deal but make sure you get everything you will need in the estimate.

Thanks for the quick reply. The electrical I am not to concerned with, because I can do that later, and all myself. I just need the building up soon, so I have somewhere to move all my junk when we move.

I don't really want any windows for security reasons. But the point you bring up about the eaves hanging off is a very good point. I don't know what would be better, to extend the metal on out, or put in gutters later. I am thinking gutters.

If you would like to do online comparison of prices, I would recommend steelbuilding.com. Their web site has real time options/prices, just input what you want, see the price. If you do use them, call and get a better price.
I recently got a 36x60x14 fully insulated, 3 roll up doors, sky lights from them, very satisfied with price and product.

Glad to see you are pricing insulation. You wont regret it if you spend any time in it. If it is just storage, and not a place to work on stuff, then maybe you can get away without it.

Upsize your doors. I put an 18' wide custom garage door with garage door opener on one end. It was insulated and that was $1550 itself 5 years ago. I park a full size car and a suburban in it and sometimes wish I had put a 20' door in.

Get your kit quoted with a 3:12 pitch. It looks better and works better for not much more.

I know the kit prices seem like a bargain but when you add up everything, all said all done it will be most likely more than you are planning. But if you are doing all the labor, maybe just maybe it can be done. You'll need helpers for slab, frame, and tin.
Since your inlaws do concrete, are you saying you can pour a slab that size for just cost of materials? I hope you have a strong back and knees.

Good luck and keep us posted

I got a quote for a 30x40 a few months ago, with only one 10'x10' roll up door for $8600 (just the metal package).

You may try getting a quote fro Mueller buildings too, I don't know if they have a place there, but most any place will ship. Also Metal Mart

Your price doesn't sound bad at all. I did find that in this economy, I was able to negotiate some on price between dealers too.

I've learned that prices can vary greatly.
My 40'x56'x12' with two garage doors and 7 windows came in at $29K. That is materials and labor to put up. Not cement nothing, just the building. I'm not sure what the material and labor cost are and at some point would like to see and itemized statement.

I fooled around a bit on there yesterday, the price quoted was about equal to the other place, but it made no mention of material quality, stainless fastners, american made, or I couldn't find it anyway. I need to get back on there again. Then probably call them. I am limited on how much phone calling I can do as I am currently sitting out in the ocean on a drilling rig and trying to get some things figured out before I get home.

You are probably right on the bigger door, especially since I may put an RV camper in it one day, and I will price the steeper roof as well.

The price I got for the concrete was just for the concrete. He said he can prep the site and do the labor and everything for $5,000. I think that is a great deal.

Thanks, I will look into those guys. Online I typed in (steel buildings) and was bombarded with about a million different companies.

I am looking into someone to put it up so I can get an idea on labor.

My wife talked to her Dad (the guy with the concrete company) and he said I might should look into timber framed construction using metal chicken house trusses. I can get a good deal on some metal trusses, and some used power poles. He also said he had a builder that owes him some big favors and he doesn't need anything built so he could build the barn for me for a fair price. The guy has a great rep and supposedly does good work. Would the wood construction be just as good? How bad do the wood purlins and such warp? I am thinking this could be the way to go. I havent talked to him yet, my wife is relaying all this to me, so I guess I should just call him for more info.

Thanks again for the replies!

My brother is in the process of putting up a 48x72x18 pole barn shed with insulated metal interior walls and ceiling. 36'x18' insulated hydraulic lift door, 14'x14' roll up insulated, 7.5" cement floor with rebar and 2" styrofoam insulation, 48x30' front pad, 4 walk in doors for about $80,000 including all labor. Cement bid with rebar ect was $26000. Lights and wiring will be done by me and nephew. $16,000 sounds cheap!

This will be our first hydraulic door. Powerlift Hydraulic Doors
People who have them, love them. Also provides some shade over the front pad when open. Gov't is allowing full depreciation for farm sheds in 1 year if built in 2011 instead the of normal 15 year depreciation. Lots of sheds going up this year. Companies can't find enough builders to put them up.

I have a 40x40x10 from Steel Buildings | Metal Buildings | Storage Buildings | HeritageBuildings.com that I built myself about 6 years ago. I put in the 3" fiberglass insulation ad their rollup door. I would recommend a tracked door instead of rollup because they seal better. Mine has a 4" gap at the top when it's shut because the roll gets smaller as it pays off.

A friend from work just built a 50x50x14 last year from the same supplier. He's pretty happy with it.
