John Deere 4200 4WD Hydro will not start, please help me out!!! I was doing some backhoe work and was on a slight incline, went to drive tractor forward and it stalled out. Checked fuel and it was low and with the incline could have ran out. (not sure) it didn`t sputter at all, just when I gave it gas to move forward it died suddenly. Filled it up and now I cannot get it to start. Towed it about 10 ft so that it is now sitting on level ground. I sprayed a real small amout of starting fluid in air intake and it ran for a couple seconds, I`m sure just on the starting fluid, seems like its not getting fuel. Drained fuel bowl, tried pumping the manual pump but still nothing, checked all fuses, can someone please help me out!!!

Don't use starting fluid if possible. The newer Yanmar's have a self bleeding fuel injection system. Not sure on 4200. Check if it has a plunger pump or bleed screw near the fuel filter.

Bleed the fuel system to the filters first and then bleed each injector at the injector. Start at the first one in line and work your way down the line. I bet It will fire right up. To move the fuel thru the system, You will need to use the starter motor, priming pump (on the fuel pump) If it has one, and starting fluid, if all else fails-- Ken Sweet

Get out your Owner's Manual -- I would think it has step-by-step instructions for the procedures of bleeding your fuel lines.

I have the owners manual and it says that fuel system is self priming. I will try and bleed at each injector like was mentioned above as soon as I find out how to do that?? any help on how to bleed the injectors??? Thanks again for all the help!!

A safer alternative to starting fluid is WD-40. Wet a rag or paper towel with WD-40, place it near the air intake. The fumes from the WD-40 will start the engine without the explosive burst you get from starting fluid. Local Ford dealer service tech gave me that tip about 20 years ago - works fine on diesel trucks too.

zdog,

On my 4700 there is a lever next to the fuel bowl cutoff fuel when changing the filter. If you have one see if its in the open position. Mine was tough to turn so it would be hard to believe that it moved.

Also check you battery and battery cables. Is it possible the BH usage could have move the battery connections around? Sounds like you are getting power though.

Is your fuel ok? Drain some fuel and see what it looks like. Put in fresh fuel and the Powerservice that disperses water. I forget if it was the white or gray bottle....

I could not start once it was because water was in the fuel. LONG story. But I had to change out the fuel filter, purge the fuel lines, put in fresh fuel, and Powerservice.

Later,
Dan

Every fall when the cold (30-45degF)damp weather hits I have trouble with my 4300 not starting . It has always been because of an open circuit in the thermyster for the fuel solenoid( 4yrs in a row). This 57cent unit allows full voltage to the solenoid to pull it in but drops the voltage after a few seconds so it has just enough voltage to hold it in. The little critter is somewhere behind the fuse panel and once the tractor starts and warms up evrything is OK until the next cold start. To do the initial start however I must remove the side panel to get at the three wires to the solenoid, then short the white wire to ground while hitting the key. It always starts instantly when I do this.
I have had the dealer change the thermyster then the problem goes away(even at 0degF) for the next year.Below 10degF I normally plug in the heater.

Another safer less harmful alternative to starting fluid is carburetor/choke cleaner, available at Wal-mart for about $1.50 a can. I drive a big diesel trucks and sometimes the fuel filters have to be swapped out without means of bleeding the system afterwards. It might take a half dozen attempts to keep it running with carb cleaner, but the air will eventually work its way out and the engine will run.
