Help, I\'m melting...

Hi, folks.

I find myself in mucho need of tractor. Let me give a brief run down of my situation. I have 4 acres and about to purchase 43 more. The real issue is with the 4 though. On December 16 2000, we got struck by an F4 tornado. We lost 1/3rd of our house and over 150 70+ year old poplar, red oak and hickory trees. We bought this place because it was so heavily wooded. Now I have 4 acres of heavily stumped hilly pasture. I have cleaned up all the fallen trees (no small feat) although I am still stuck with about 80 tons of firewood that I can't even give away. With so much damage caused by the storm, no one wanted all the hardwood for boards. A shame really.

I have spent an honest 15 hours behind a DR brush mower this week. Half the property is very hilly. If you have never used a walk-behind brush mower, you have never had a real workout :) Years of weightlifting and football, and a brush mower whips my butt - go figure.

Since I am about to buy some more land, I feel I can justify the cost of a cheap tractor and implements. Honestly, I would do it even if I wasn't buying the land. The thought of another 50 hours behind the DR this summer just doesn't appeal to me. Besides, I have some stumps to move and a lot of holes to dig for a fence. There is also still a lot of grading that has to be done, and I have a 100 foot long 8 foot high 20 foot wide brush pile that I can't burn.

So. all that leads up to the following list of items that I think will do the job and serve my needs down the road a piece. I have no experience with tractors, but as an engineer, mechanical things certainly don't task me much. Please have a look at my list and tell me what you think, options better prices, whatever. I have monitored this website for a while, and it is obviously populated by some very knowledgeable people. I do appreciate your consideration.

Nortrac 25hp tractor with ag tires FEL and 60inch box blade - $10,699

Howse 5 foot rough cut mower and chain guard $770

3 point post hole digger with commercial 3:1 gearbox $374
9 inch and 12 inch augers $218

DR PTO 4.5 inch chipper for about $1700. It has a 6 month no questions asked return policy, so if it fries, they get it back.

Thanks!
David

Re: Help, I\'m melting...

Wow David, sorry to hear about your trees. That must have been a scary experience.

Just my opinion but with almost 50 acres I think you are going with to small of tractor. The Nortrac I believe is going to be challenged with a 5' rotary mower in heavy grass and chippers have pretty demanding power needs also. I think something closer to 30 PTO hp would be a better match.

The Chinese tractors tend to require a bit more one on one time with a wrench and not all dealers are willing to work on them. If you are a wrench kind of guy that may be fine and a number of members here seem to like theirs.

Good luck with whatever you decide and with the rest of your clean up.

Re: Help, I\'m melting...

Ditto what MarkV said. You will need more tractor for everything except the 5' box blade. That 25hp tractor only has 20-21 pto hp.

Re: Help, I\'m melting...

That Nortrac is also "challenged" as far as hydraulics.. (despite northern's former name).

If I were in your position I'd probably look around to see if there were any stronger USED tractors out there. I spent 30 grand on a new Kubota (loader & BH) and my neighbor bought a (big) used Deere TLB for about $12k off a rental yard. It may have a lot of hours on it.. but it's still a strong worker that will dig circles around my tractor. When I have a big project, I call HIM!

You'll wish you had a big backhoe when you start trying to pull those stumps.

Sorry about the loss of all those trees. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

On the other hand, welcome to the site. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

To build on what the others said about a machine with 30 PTO hp, here are a few models for you to check out:

The first one is the John Deere 990. It has 40.4 engine hp, and 35 PTO hp.

John Deere 990

The next in line is the Kioti DK40. It has 40 engine hp and 33.4 PTO hp.

Kioti DK40

The final one is the Kubota L3400. I'm not sure if it would be much underpowered for your tasks or not. But it has 34.7 engine hp and 29 PTO hp.

Kubota L3400

If the L3400 is a bit underpowered for your needs you can move up to the L4300. It has 45.3 engine hp and 37.5 PTO hp.

Kubota L4300

I hope I could help. Good luck! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Btw, I forgot to mention, for the work you are going to be doing, it may be worth it to get a bolt on toothbar for the FEL bucket along with a heavy duty FEL bucket. Also, some hooks welded to the bucket may be worthwhile, too.

Re: Help, I\'m melting...

Sorry to hear you lost 1/3rd of your HOUSE! That must have been terrifying!

I think that JayC gave you some very good leads on where to start. I think in your situation you'd be better off with a good brand name tractor rather than a Chinese brand. I'm sure you'll be able to fit your needs with one of JayC's recommendations.
Good luck. G

Re: Help, I\'m melting...

If you are going to maintain 50 o so acers I think you might want to go used agricultural tractor.

I have a kubota 3130, a great tractor, but to small for some stuff that I do. I bought a JD 4020 with powershift and a low hour engine with fel for 9K about two months ago. It has 95 hp and will do anything that I need to do.

With the two tractors it covers all of the work that I need.

If you are going to buy a cut look at the larger 40-50 hp models.

Just my 0.02

Re: Help, I\'m melting...

You definitely need to consider more power.
If you're talking 25hp at the engine, I'd be surprised if you got 20 at the PTO.
That's just not much, especially if you're considering the use of a chipper, or a bushhog.
I'd say double the hp.
Better to have a large strong tractor that works very little than a small weaker tractor that you have to beat into the dirt to get the job done.

Good luck,

Anthony

Re: Help, I\'m melting...

Sorry to here about your trees. Also you might want to look at the CUB 8000 series tractors. You should be able to pick up an 8354 which is a 35HP 28.3HP at PTO or a 8404 41HP 4 cyl. 33.4PTO HP. These tractors new will run 15,000 to 18,000. Good luck on your tractor shopping and remember any color tractor is a good tractor. Good luck with the tree removal. I have to pull a few down trees myself.
