The sad part about this is a couple of months from now a high degree of probability exist that a large civil lawsuit will be filed against Law Enforcement for dereliction of duty. Allegation will be they, Law Enforcement and other Civil Authorities knew the protest ride was planned and probably had the riders under visual observation and took no enforcement action to prevent them from engaging in illegal activity. The allegation will allege if civil authorities and Law Enforcement had enforced the law, no injury or death would have occurred.

Doubt that will go anywhere.

No doubt wearing helmets saves lives, I wouldn't get on a bike without one, the question is how much control do we want the government to have in protecting us from ourselves.

They have been trying to get the 'helmet optional' thing here in Michigan. Our state is a no fault insurance state, and we all pay in to a fund for catastrophic auto accidents to help pay for long term medical. My take is [ long time bike rider ] that if they want to go helmetless, they should have to carry extra medical insurance to cover their own arse. Which they, of course, do not want to pay..... They want all of us to cover them for when they need their diaper changed/druil wiped off their face... and not man up and pay for extra insurance ahead of time.

I just have to wonder how this is different from other individuals who are injured doing other risky/dangerous activities?

Many see the very act of riding a motorcycle as unnecessarily dangerous and refer to them as "murdercycles" as per Joan Claybrooke.

He showed them, he put his money where his mouth is.

I agree, if you want to go without a brain bucket, than pay for the extra risk.

Actually none. Then one of the "Doing My Own Thing" suffers serious injury requiring lengthy hospitalization or nursing home care. The "Tax Payer" is then asked to pick up the tab for Hospital Medical treatment or long term Nursing Home care and treatment. When resistance to the Tax Payer paying for all treatment is encountered local media and non-profits will lament on how the individual is being denied needed medical care by Governmental Bureaucratc´s and hard hearted and uncaring individuals.

In CT we have a choice, that's how it should be everywhere IMO.

I do think they should be required for minor passengers.

When I had rice burners I almost always wore a high quality full face helmet.

My brothers and sister who ride Harleys never wear helmets, so you see there is some kind of divide there. The idea that the crotch rocket rider is gonna ride much more aggressively than the Harley rider is real for the most part.

But IMO these older Harley riders should be wearing helmets as their reflexes are slowing. Just like the older tractor operator seems to be much more prone to running himself over or getting crushed in his barn by his tractor, than the younger operator, even though logic would dictate the opposite based on the experience level of the 2.
