I am new to welding. I bought a Miller Pro Hobby auto darkening helmet. I am having a problem with the helmet sliding down in front while I am trying to weld. The problem is not with the helmet, it's that the back of my head is more or less flat and there's nothing for the headgear to hang on to. I recently saw an episode of American Chopper and Junior appeared to be using a helmet with headgear that was positioned lower on the back of the head. I am wondering if the Jackson Nitro series helmets with the 370 headgear actually fits on the back of the head a little lower than the standard headgear.

Any suggestions are much appreciated!

I have a different problem, but my solution might work for you. The headgear on my HF autodarkening wants to sit right on top of my "killbone" - that knuckle like bump at the base of the skull. If I adjust the strap tight enough so that that helmet stays up when I flip it up it hurts like crazy. My solution was to attach a piece of sorbothane foam around the back half of the strap. Now it stays put without hurting my head all the time. Perhaps adding something compressible to your headgear might give it the grio you find it lacks.

Maybe 3" +/- piece of leather will help.

Another option is, I have sold some front headbands that are foam covered in lamb skin or a fine grained leather. You can crank the headgear down pretty tight without discomfort. Or you can put one in front, Top and back. it will hold as long as you have the top band adjusted correctly. It just gives the headgear a little more traction on your head. Otherwise Jackson and Hornell Speedglass are the only ones I know of with the low back headgear. Good luck..

Not sure what your head gear looks like, but if it has an adjustable band running over the top of your head, set it to allow the gear to set further down on your head. A welding cap helps a lot too.
