1997 Kubota M5400S
Hello to all,

For the first time ever, my headlights on my 1997 M5400S did not work. Not sure the last time I used my tractor at night, but they would not come on in either hi or low mode. The dash kind of lit up some, but not as strong as what I remembered. The flashing rear lights work fine.

I did not have time to troubleshoot anything bc I have to leave to go back home. The battery is new.

What would be a good order of steps to determine what is wrong? I would imagine seeing of mice chewed something, if any plugs came undone. Is there a fuse for the headlights? My Op's Manual is at the ranch and I forgot to bring it hm w me.

Thank you in-advance for your help,
tstex

Basically check fuses and check switch for correct contact closure when operated (volt meter or test light)... If both good, start chasing wiring, could be as simple that a "connection" became disconnected...

The headlights probably work off of relays. Good place to start After checking fuses.

Thank you very much DL & grs, appreciate it. I also keep my tractor covered inside a shed at all times when I am not using it...On my model, where typically is the fuse box located? I do not believe I have ever replaced a fuse...Are the relays close to fuse box? Thanks again

Not sure about a '97 but the later models have the fuses under the steering wheel on the left side.

Recently lost lights in my 5800 but was the results of mice finding the wires underneath the cowling behind the steering wheel so was only able to diagnose it with a multimeter/continuity.

Carefully inspect headlight wiring. You may have had rodents snacking on the insulation.

I suspect mice is the issue, but will do as you guys suggest. I am hoping for a fuse. I will also have access to my Op's manual so I can go thru that process of troubleshooting.

Did a search on the matter and listed below...pretty much what you guys have stated. I am going back either tomorrow or Wed/Thur, so I will troubleshoot and post back...thanks again to all

  1. Neither of the headlights work.
    • The cause: Burned out bulbs, or an issue with power or ground.
    • The fix: Check for power and ground, and fix if necessary. Otherwise, replace the bulbs.
    • Bulbs usually don’t burn out together, but it’s still important to rule that out by checking for power. Most total headlight failures are caused by a bad component like a fuse, relay, or module. Wiring problems can also cause both headlights to stop working.

Turn you lights on and check for voltage from
the head lights back (the wires) should be an
easy find and fix. Attached the black probe to
ground and probe with the red wire

Ok, well whomever guessed mice, that’s it..sorry little basxxxds!!

Is it possible to re use these white plastic clips? If so, what’s the trick to getting old wires out and new in? If not, does anyone know of a place to acquire them?

thank you very much in advance!
