I have a woods 1009 that I repacked all four of the cylinders on due to the seals being dried out. The loader was purchased second hand and had not seen service for sometime. When repacking the bucket cylinders, I notice it had some wear on one part of both head glands. One was worst (left) than the other. When installed they worked fine, until the other day I was picking up some heavy clay and the left one started leaking again.
The leak had stopped later while still moving the clay. I had noticed that the right was wet but had no drops visible. Well yesterday while working on finishing up moving the clay the left start with a steady stream coming out when ever it was being moved. The loader appeared to have been abused before I purchased it and would like info on weather changing the head gland would work (~$65 and new seals) or need to replace the cylinder @ $650.

There is a cylinder that is close at surplus but it is 3/4" shorter on the extended length for under $100. Which if it would work I'll have to replace both bucket cylinders.

Unless the bucket now dumps beyond center I don't think I would go shorter. I used generic cross type cylinders on my John Deere and it worked out okay. In my case all the hoses were cracked already so having different length hoses wasn't too big of a deal. Pay attention to the port location and widths of the ends. I had to switch my port locations to top and bottom instead of side. I also had to trim an 1/8" off each side of the head end and added spacers to the rod ends. Also look at pin eye or tang type cylinders to see if one of those is a closer match.

Not sure any of what I did would apply to your Woods loader but it might give you some insight on switching to generic cylinders.

Thanks for the input. I forgot to put that the loader called for spacers on the cylinder pin on the bucket but there were none. I ran it for awhile without but during the heavy lifting I had noticed the rod end sliding back and forth when moving the bucket. I assume this caused the gland wear. I don稚 know how long they were off the loader before I installed it.

That痴 why I am leaning toward replacing the one that is leaking now. I値l pull it tomorrow and inspect for other issues.

Check your cyls. rods, make sure they are not bent.

That was the plan for today but there is a bad t-storm band pushing through the area. If the spacers failing to be installed just caused the wear on the gland instead of rod damage I am inclined to replace the gland and seal. I did look at the rod when repacking and at that time it looked ok. The only issue I saw was the wear on one "side" of the gland. I didn't think about the rod sliding without the spacers on the bucket until it started leaking again and noticed the rod end sliding from side to side. The total movement it was traveling was about 3/8" off center to each side.

Well, took it part to see the issues that may have been causing the leak. The head gland is not usable anymore due to the wear on the rod side of it and it also has a section on the retaining ring groove that is missing. There is visible marks on the remaining groove where the ring had pressed into the groove. The piston also has signs of wear on it. I went to a local shop and was told that they would have to check the run out on the shaft due to the wear he suspect that it has a bend in it that was causing the wear issues. All that being said @ $500 min for the repair or $600 for a new, I'll have to do some research on replacing the cylinder.

Yeah the math doesn't work when a repair is over half the cost of new.

I spent just a little over a grand for 4 new cylinders and ALL new hoses and adapters. That includes adapters for a third function valve and brand new custom made hoses. You should be able to do 2 cylinders and hoses if needed for $500.

Check the specs on Prince Wolverine cylinders. You might also look at Bailey Hydraulics and Magister. The Magister cylinders are what I used and they are working fine so far. They are made in the Ukraine but they have US stock and will ship out same or next day. They have detail drawings for their cylinders online. I think you can find detailed drawings for all the Prince cylinders too. Prices fluctuate on both but specifications are similar between makes and types.

Thanks for the info. I have a 16.75 stroke with 24' retract and 1.25 pins. The ones on the web are 16" stroke with the 24" retracted and pin size is not that big of an issue due to the bushings you can get to "resize" the pin. I just need to due a little testing on the stroke to see how the bucket will react to the shorter extended measurement.

What cyl are you looking at on SC ?

There are a few on there that are close just trying to decide on the cross tube or the thru hole design similar to the ones on the loader. There is one with a 17 inch stroke that looks to have an extra section of tube welded to it to reach the length that it must need to fit what ever application it was designed to used. I sent a request for the measurement of the hydraulic ports to see if I may be able to cut the extended part off and weld the end of my tube on it that would be the pretty close to original if that would be possible.
