The tires on my old ford 513 roller bar rake are seeing their last days. They are bar tread like tractor tires, 5.0 x15. Is there any problem with me using a regular 3 rib front tractor tire on them at 50 bucks a piece versus the original type at 150 bucks a piece? I don't see an issue myself so I thought I'd ask you guys.

I wouldn't use the rib steering tires. I have regular radial car tires on my NH 256.

I should elaborate my reasoning. The more tire surface to the ground the better to keep the rolabar from skipping a beat. Used tires are great just make sure it doesn't rub the frame.

Thanks for the input. I'll check into car tires.

We have a big place here that sells used tires. We use those on most of our stuff when we can get away with it. $25 installed with a tube is good.

would say car / truck tires as well.

front rib tires for a tractor. i could almost see the tires grabbing the dirt. and not allowing the rake to turn when you want it to turn.

front rib tires, act like skies at times

would also suggest used car tires. its not like the rake see's 1,000 of miles on the rake. just need enough tire to keep the rake out off the ground, and keep it from scraping the pavement when ya go up and down the roads.

not walk but run away from any "dry rotted" tires. dry rotted and checking / filling with air = higher chance of a bomb going off in your face. as the tire ruptures.

Old used car tires with whitewall sides out seem to be popular amongst the hillbillies around here. Rake traction should be good on anything you put on it because the hay has been cleared under the tire paths.

BKT makes a cheap 5.00x15 Traction Implement tire. I sell a half dozen a year. less the half the price of a Firestone or Goodyear OEM style hay rake tire.

i just take the rims with the flat or worn-out tire to the tire store and tell the guy "i need this wheel to have about the same height and width, don't care what kind of tire goes on it" $20 later i'm good to go.

Did this with a flat on my NH273 baler last year and my hay rake this year. working just fine.
