Hello all. I have a John Deere 4520 and would like suggestions on what type of equipment to use for a small hay operation.

1. Which type of mower? Sickle bar, disk mower, drum mower?
2. What size mower? 6', 7', etc.

1. Small square baler. Which brand is preferred, and what size.

Any opinions or information would be greatly appreciated.

I seem to recall a good thread on the Ag forum here at TBN that discussed various baler models and some info regarding mowers, etc.

A search for hay, baling, etc. should dig up some past discussions.

The ag forum is a better spot for this question.

There are a lot of questions.

What kind of crop?

Square or round bale?

I am getting in haying for my own cattle. I have a 5525 cab tractor. I just picked up a JD 467 round baler and a John wheel rake. I am waiting on a used Krohn disc mower. 9'2" I believe is the length.

I will be baling my own coastal hay.

With a 4520 unless you get a pretty small round baler, you will be doing small squares. A 6' or so disc mower and you are in business.

What have you figured out so far?

Sorry, I forgot to mention the crops were going to be alfalfa, and an orchard grass fescue mix. I only plan on the small squares, but have no idea which baler would be the right size and the best overall equipment. I have looked at John Deere 336, New Holland 315, and a few others, but really do not know which is best, or which would fit my tractor the best.

As for the mower, I already have a couple of 7' sickle bar mowers, but would like to have a disc mower or a drum mower, but again I don't know the best machine for my tractor, or what my tractor could handle. I would love to have the biggest mower my tractor can handle.

Thanks for the info so far.

I am looking at a Hesston or Massey In-Line square baler. I think it would do the job for you. I guess it is finally time to replace my old MF square baler. We've used it every year since the 60's.

Check there websites.
