My daughter just got back from a Student Conservation Association project on Isle Royale National Park. She loved it. 3 boys 3 girls and 2 leaders on a month long project doing trail maintenance. Seems like a well run outfit. They work closely with the Park service. All the kids have to pay for is their personal gear and transport to the park. The leaders pick them up at the airport. There are projects in parks all over the country. My niece is about to leave for a project in Alaska. Seems like a great way for high school kids to spend part of the summer. It can lead to a summer job with the park service where the pay is something like $17.50/hr. How many high school and college kids can make that kind of money in the summer? My sister said a lot of the Rangers she met at Glacier NP got started with SCA. If you have a high schooler who likes the outdoors it might be worth looking into.
