Experiencing a severe drought in my area, and have to start hauling water approximately 10 miles. Plan to use an open 100 gal stock tank in one of my trailers. Looking for ideas on how to minimize the sloshing that will tank place in the tank when driving down a county road. Will use the water for irrigating high bush blueberries and young apple trees, not for human or animal consumption. Any and all ideas appreciated.

Well you could make a bolt down top with baffle plates attached out of plywood. If you are able to fill it completely, you probably won't need the baffles. If you can not fill it completely, then the baffles will cut down on the slosh and free-flow effect. All thread rods thru holes drilled n close alongside the tank that run down thru a plywood sheet on the bottom or preferably thru the trailer floor would hold the top on and help to hold the tank inplace. See attached .BMP(use CTRL + PAGE DOWN to zoom in). Something solid up front to keep that 800 pound battering ram in place whenthe beakes are applied woulsd also be advisable.

Have you looked around for a couple of poly drums? Ususlly found for not very much at surplus stores. Two 55 gal drums would do the same thing and perhaps be a little easier to deal with and not as much work as fabbing up a workable top.

Good Luck

I agree with Ron. I'd try to find a couple of 55 gallon barrels instead of trying to use an open 100 gallon tank.

Thanks both, for the ideas. Have the stock tank, but will check on availability of poly tanks in this area. Doesn't look like this drought will be over for awhile.
Lake Superior is down 2 feet. another 3 inch drop and that will be the lowest it's been since records have been kept.

These may be hard to find in your area but around here they are found quite frequently, sometims for giveaway. I know the ones I have came from a water treatment plant so I use them to haul water to fill my sons pool, 400 gal at a time. They have a common fitting, I think 1 1/2" that I reduced down to a garden hose size so I can supply my presure washer and also water the garden with them. They are called IBC's but I'm not sure what that stand for.
Might be handy if you need a long term solution.

When we had a power failure here that lasted a long time, some of my friends used their horse troughs to get water from me (tractor generator). I had them cover the tanks with a sheet of styrofoam which had the outline of the tank impressed into it. Cover with a sheet pf plywood and some concrete blocks and they didn't spill a drop. You can get a spigot attachment for the tank and add a garden hose for distributing the water as needed.

Hauling water = no fun. I've done it.

If you have many head, you will discover that 100 gal is consumed almost as fast as you can pour it out.

A 10 mile haul.... oops....lots of $$ on fuel if you do this even a couple of times... I'd look for ways to increase the gallons per trip that you can handle.

I agree...if you don't get a 300 gal tank or larger, get a bunch of 55 gal drums... you're going to need the water and fewer trips is better!

I suggest you go get a poly tank that is made especially for pickups. I have a 225 gallon that fits between the wheel wells and it cost a little over a hundred bucks. No sloshing, no trailer, no muss, no fuss. If you have a creek closer than 10 miles, I'd also invest in a water pump and draw water out of it.

This is what I did when faced with the same problem last summer.

Not sure this applies to such large amounts of water.....

One time I had a problem with my water in the barn. I had to fill up a 75 gallon tank. So I had 5 5 gallon buckets handy. And an RTV. No problem, I think, fill the buckets and haul them down there to the horse paddock.

Well, there was lots of spillage.

So, the wife says, put a garbage bag in each bucket and use a twisty tie to close them up.

Didn't spill a drop after that. 4 trips later the stock tank was filled up and the horses were happy.

But, I don't think you could get a 225 gallon bag ......

Just my 2¢

I like your idea, you sure could get 33gal bags for trash barrels. I hauled water to our barn in a rubbermaid trash barrel strapped to the loader bucket, worked well. The lid fits fairly tight.
