Hardwood/Softwood Wood Pellets

Anyone know any differences between burning hardwood or softwood based premium wood pellets?

Pellets we burned last year were premium hardwood pellets and the company rates them at 8400 btu/lb. I started looking for pellets in our area and a different manufacturer's premium pellets are softwood and rated at 8990 btu/lb.

I have never been able to pin down any of the suppliers of pellets as to there being hardwood or softwood. I have noticed that some pellets burn better than others and I have also noticed that the same brand will vary from lot to lot. I don't think that there is an industry standard beyond the 40 pound bag. I burn about 3 tons a year and this year, I was quoted $215 a ton paid in advance. After September 1st, the price jumps to $225 a ton, also paid in advance. If you don't buy in advance, then the price keeps going up as the winter goes on. I buy my seasons use and pick up a few bags each time I go to town. Save handling them twice. If I want them delivered, it is $10 a ton more. Last winter, I was paying $185 a ton. $159 a ton and they will deliver free of charge as I need them. Oh yea, I know this is a sweet deal and the dealers in pellets around here can't understand how they do it.

While there may be a difference in how they burn, there really isn't much difference in BTU/lb from one type of wood to another. All wood has approximately the same BTU/lb be it lightweight pine or heavy locust. I really wonder about the '40 pound bags'. Do they really weigh 40 lbs or do they take a "40 lb bag" and fill it with what fits in?

In almost all states and/or countys if anything is sold by the lb. ( oz, ton, gram etc.) it better weigh at least the stated weight or more or its in violation of weights & measures laws.
