I am hearing that parts are getting hard to find for the 950 and 1050 models. If you owner a 950 or 1050 and you have had trouble getting a part for a 950 or 1050 please post that info here.

It would help those of us who are new to owning or considering owning a 950 or 1050.... Plus, those who know of sources of those parts could jump in here and offer good advice where to find them.

Thank you very much.

Are you familiar with Hoyetractor.com? Example: 1050 parts.

Hoye started as support for the gray market Yanmars. As they learn cross-references between Yanmar and the same parts also used on the Yamar-built Deeres, they have expanded their Deere pages.

I've used Hoye for over 10 years. They do a good job of phone or email consultation, and mailorder - a customer-oriented company. The parts seem to be the equivalent of NAPA-quality auto parts, quite suitable.

Another source for Yanmar/Deere parts might be Fredricks. Their emphasis is a little different. They specialize in reconditioning imported used Yanmars to literally the equivalent of new, in fact they are the only such firm authorized by Yanmar-USA to use the Yanmar trademark for marketing their reconditioned units. My experience with Fredricks has been that they have, or can get, anything, but they aren't as smooth as Hoye for mailorder service. You might need to tell them a Yanmar part # rather than a Deere # for the same part before they will look it up for you.

Here is a easy way to see this for yourself. Most of the paperwork from my 950 is gone along with the tractor when it sold. You can do parts searches on line with John Deere Direct, it's a great sight giving you access to parts stored nation wide. Try looking up these front axle gears and transmission parts.

All of these parts no longer stocked by John Deere. Mostly front axle gears and transmission gears. Got these from a scrap of paper still in the files. Many more were the same case. California is right, some of the items I bought during the rebuild did indeed come from Hoye Tractor Parts at less than what John Deere wanted. Great people over at Hoye to deal with. Fredrick's is the same, can't say enough good things about them both. Just like anything else, Hoye, Fredrick's or John Deere didn't have them all. I had to do a scavenger hunt with tractor salvage yards and ebay to finish the rebuild. I got it done, but not easy or always readably available. To be fair with John Deer, most things are available, just not some of the critical service parts.

Both Calif and Chris have shared great information and it has given me just what I needed to decide that I am going to wait on the 1050 that I have looked at and hold out for something newer like a 970/1070.

The 1050 is at Mels Tractor in Oregon and from what I can see by the pics, it is a good 1050...but I am still going to wait....

Thanks guys!

Charlie, I can't guarantee that the 970-1070 are fully supported either. The few little parts I've needed have been available from the local John Deere dealer just fine so far, but for the most part, all I've done so far is just use mine and it's worked well. The lesson I've learned along the way after having 3 tractors, is to buy a tractor that has the best parts support. Yanmar makes a great little tractor for John Deere, but they don't last for ever. Best price you can find might not end up being the best long term deal. If I was in the market for a tractor again, I'd stop by their dealership and ask how far back they provide support for their tractors. John Deere has to have a agreement with Yanmar on how long they are going to support any model they have made for them. Don't know if they will disclose this to the public, but it's worth a try. My 970 is a 1993 and it's now 23 years old. It's got to be close to the end of it's parts support, of not past it. Sounds like you have money to invest in this, get as new as you can get without breaking the bank doing so. What caused me to sell my 950 was the trouble getting parts during the rebuild, not that it wasn't a good tractor. Didn't want to go through that kind of trouble again the next time I needed replacement parts for it.

Chris, The only thing for me that is the "70" series is ten years newer than the 50 series, so conceptually, their parts should be easier to find..

I wish we could rely on the serial number to tell us how many tractors were made that year the tractor. But, since these models all had "reset" numbers at the beginning of the years you cannot rely on the serial number to tell you how many tractors were made.

Does anyone know of a source that states the number of tractors that were made within a particular mode/series?

I am pretty familiar with the website, but I cannot fine any page or tab labeled as "index" or any page or tab that lists the number of machines made by model....

That TractorData Deere 1050 page shows the starting serial number for each model year. For some years they seem to round up to the next even thousand to start the new year so this isn't very precise, but it may be the only information available that is relevant to your question.

I see they started the final year 1988 at # 21479, and the preceding numbers increment some 2500 or more each year on average. So maybe 15~20,000 Model 1050's overall?

OK. Yes, I did see the serial number list. With the rounding up the next year, it makes it tough to know how many tractors were built in any given model.

I am just trying to make sure I do not end up with a model where parts are hard to come by and knowing how many units were made, and what models the parts interchange with can really make the difference.

Thanks.
