Anyone here dabble in this hobby? Kinda got the bug to try out hand carving wood. Started carving a spoon out of a piece of cherry. It's not as easy as I've read and watched......

keep at it & have fun.
Get as close as possible with a table or band saw. If you are not adverse to using a power tool, a Dremel with a rotory bit will be a big help.
In the past I have caved a face in a soft balsa wood model, a pine wood derby car.
An arm & hand in mesquite. Most recent was a handle for a hatchet. Will try to find the picture of it.
All of that was with an exacto knife. They make a nice set for a few $$$ that is a big help. Al-tho is it on my projects.

Wall world has a nice set for about $20. Cheep lathe tools from Harbor Fright will also be a help.

Enjoy.

Forgot to mention a rasp, coarse file & several grits of sand paper. A box cutter & chisel. keep your tools sharp.
Also a simple hand glider. Not just fun to build, but fun to fly.

Things that are useful are the best.

I have done a fair bit myself.
Sharp tools are the key.
I have also cheated as I made a chain saw disk that is powered by my grinder, works great for rough quick work and the teeth leave marks that fool you into believing that everything was done by hand.

I have carved decoys, loons and other objects.

Most of my tools are hand made using 4130 steel that I had.
Sharpening and honing is the key to good performance.

I played around with it for a little bit years ago. I'd like to do some more, but never seem to have the time. When I build my addition, I'm planning on carving the front door. That should be interesting.

My father whittled this chain with swivel and ball sometimeIMG_20171119_132753.jpg around 1950. I believe he used an old "Case" pocket knife.

I wonder what happened with the one that started this tread.
