I recently bought a GT1554 with the 54" deck and it keeps throwing the deck belt - previous owner said it would happen sometimes but not as often as it does now. All the pulleys turn quiet and easy and are not damaged. When I put a level across the pulleys they are all even except the one on the left that turns the blade, nearest the idle tension spring - this one is about 3/8" lower. Is that the way it should be? seems like it would only increase the chances of a belt coming loose, and would get worse as the deck is lowered. I replaced the belt but didn't have any effect on the problem. Any comments or advice would be appreciated.

A photo of the deck and pointing out the issue could help.

Replacing the tensioner arm, bolt and spring usually fixes these. Possibly the spindle height difference coaxes it along. There are different spindles so it could be helpful to know which one you have. The model and serial number is below the seat and the spindle number is under the hood.

I suspect the belt tension arm/pulley in combination with the deck hanging too low in the front, the belt is jumping off of the tension idler pulley.

Should not all the pulleys be on the same plane??

Start by checking all the blades are at the same height. You can turn each blade individually easily with the belt off. The cutting edge of each blade should be the same height as you bring them close together. Check each end of each blade.

If one blade is lower and it is the one where the pulley is lower something is together wrong.

Sometimes the housing for the bearings and shaft for the blade should be on top of the deck. Other models are on the bottom. They all should be the same.

As suggested earlier, post some photos showing the deck off the tractor.

thanks for the replies.....I've had a problem finding a camera to take a picture but will do so when I can. I did find the spindle info under the hood and it says: "deck spindle 618-06718 (2)" - I don't know if the "2" is part of the model or if it means two of the spindles. When I go on the cub cadet parts site it doesn't list my model (model 14AK13BK710 - sn 1C217H30025) for looking up deck parts so will give them a call I guess. All three blade spindles appear to be mounted the same, but the height of the left blade spindle measured from the deck to the pulley bottom is less than the other two.

I was hoping someone with the same model mower and 54" deck could tell me if theirs is the same or different.

First
I got unto this Cub Cadet site using your model number.
This link should take you directly to your deck.
All three deck blade hubs are identical in every respect so if something is at a different height someone has had it apart and not put it back together properly. It is easy to get a spacer in the wrong place.

#65 in the illustration are the two ball bearings
#43 are spacers 1.322" long. Two spacers between the bearings and then one on top of the upper bearing supporting the pulley.
#72 is a spacer between the lower part of the spindle and the lower bearing.

Put #72 in the wrong place and you could have your situation.

Remove the bolt holding on the pulley. Knock the spindle down so the pulley is loose from the spindle. You don't have to remove the blade. Use a brass hammer or punch so you don't damage the spindle threads. DO NOT hit the spindle directly with a hammer, steel on steel, or the spindle threads will be damaged.

I removed and took apart the spindle as you suggested and found there was no upper bearing so it appears that's the source of my problem....have ordered a replacement and hope that will take care of it. thanks again for your knowledge and willingness to help in this way....very much appreciated.....
