Well, I found out why the end of the crankshaft is bent. When I took the front pto unit off, then the radiator, I found the pto mount was cracked, and part of the mounting flange had been cut away. I wondered why, until I got a look at the pto unit. The stub shaft that enters it was spot welded on, and the splines in the pto unit were stripped. I found the stub shaft was bent, and the u-joints were welded in place. This puzzled me until I realized what happened. At some point, either the bolts retaining the pto loosened, causing the mount to crack and finally the pto unit to be ripped out, or the mount cracked, loosening the bolts and allowing the pto to be ripped out. Either way, there's a lot of damage. Also explains why the shroud was damaged in that area. 2+2 = 4. Note to self: There's no such thing as a free lunch. You get what you pay for, yadda yadda... My sub-$1000 mower is turning into a sub-$2000 mower, minus my time which I throw away. It'll be a nice mower, if I ever get it done....
I spent tonight welding in a nice beefy pto mount. 2.5x2.5x0.25 angle iron to replace the formed angle that was there. A bit beefier. Now on to a pto unit rebuild. At least half of the thing needs to be replaced.
