Maybe they would use there "humane traps" and trap them to move them to someone elses neighborhood....but being Politically correct, they would probably enroll the ground hogs in some type of councling program to help the poor ground hogs adjust after being traumitized from the culture shock of being forcibly removed from there home and relocated somewhere else.Remember these little groundhogs are mammals like us human animals/mammals. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

And then try to get enough media attention to make the government feel bad enough to pass legislation barring discrimination based on "groundhog" status. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If your state will let be done a good neck trap is quick and easy to use and can be set so as to be pet proof by setting it over an active hole and cover it with a box or barrel . just make sure the trap is set over the hole and can spring without the box/ barrel catching and stopping it , it works on a spring action and is designed to break the neck or skull , but failing that it can take longer by coking them /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif, ,,,, when we that live here in the Peoples Republic of Massachusetts could use them legally I made sure they worked to break the neck/skull . After PETA got this foolish BAN on all JAW traps it was less than 6 months when all the YUPPIEs that had big expensive homes in the western part of the state have a fit when told that the beavers that built dams and flooded their homes could not be trapped and due to their out lawing all hunting they could not be shot . /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif... yup alot of homes with built in ponds unless you had the big bucks and time to hire in a State Licensed Live Trapper ....
Baring that you could try the smoke bombs , but you have to close off all exits and it is not always effective .... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
The 3 S's(shot , shovel and shut-up) or the TSS (trap shovel and shut-up)works best ,,,Good Luck

Wow.... StoneHeartFarm has sure suggested a new way of dealing with those pesky little varments.

I use either Haveaheart traps or the fusee gas bombs. Depends on the situation. If I can't trap them... I gas them. Simple and elegant!! Find the hole (they usually have a couple homes by the way, so search around). Make sure that you have only one opening. Light up Mr. Fusee, dump it into the hole, push it in a bit, then cover the hole with a rock and soil to seal it off... b-bye Mr Groundhoung!!.

One thing that I didn't see mentioned at all is that this is the time of year for momma to kick out the babies. So, you'll see lots of groundhound movement. Just like MDNick suggested, a swerve to the right or to the left saves the world from a few more varments.

If it is like this state anything they have on the law books that you cann't have , you cann't get shipped to you from out of state , ,,,Kodie (sp?) bear traps are the ones to get , they come in many sizes , the first one or two smaller size one will be big enough for any woodchuck, they are made out of heavy wire and have one or sometimes two springs on the side and a catch /trigger , , they are used to trap muskrats and beaver , but work well for any Critter that will get it's head in the open trap , (skunks , possuims , coons , etc. ), just make sure that you cover it from pets getting at it , and use that chain and stake it down ,,,,, just in case you get a critter that does not get the head/neck in the thing first and sets it off ...a search of trapping suppliers should find you one ...good luck
