- John Deere 870
I've looked around on this forum and found some great information. So, thought I'd join.
My dad and I purchased, in 2002, a 1994 John Deere 870 with a front loader, brush hog, and two hole drills (I think 6" and 8"). Over time, he added a back blade to the implement collection. He welded hooks to the bucket and has a variety of chains on-board. He put eye hooks to hold two long steel bars to pry things with (handy for moving the implements a hair to align for attachment.) He has 65 acres and is retired and at the time I had 7 acres and working 60 hours a week. So, the tractor lived at his place, 2 miles up the road. He is very mechanical and did all the maintenance and changed implements as needed. He is bonded with that tractor and knows all about it. I don't think there is much he has not done with that tractor.
Fast forward, and my dad is very elderly and now has my brother change implements. I'm ramping up my horse hobby, and bought an EZ Groomer arena groomer. Getting a trial by fire on changing implements by myself, understanding all the controls, etc. Matt, at Pape Cat John Deere ag dealer, is my new best friend. Other things I want to do this winter - set some posts to improve my fencing, clean out the drainage ditch, load the old bath tub water troughs on the flatbed to go the dump, etc.
A tractor like this is the best tool I can think to have on acreage. Looking forward to learning from folks on this forum!
