As I have been lurking here abouts for the last couple of weeks, thought it was time to say "hello" and introduce myself.
I live near Roanoke, VA and have 60 acres of mountain.
This summer we begin the process of clearing approx 12 - 15 acres and converting it to pasture. The purpose of this is to bring home the 4 horses that are currently being boarded several miles up the road.
I figure with the horses coming home that it's time for me to have a tractor. Of course, my brother has been telling me that I need a tractor since we bought this land nearly 24 years ago.
At any rate, I am a complete newbie when it comes to tractors and I have come here seeking enlightenment.
As I've already gleaned from my lurking here abouts, the first question should be, What am I going to do with this tractor?
My best guess is,
1. maintain driveway, 3/4 mile brick-like-clay dirt road up a mountain (that took a severe beating this winter)
2. install fencing for newly created pasture (have access to neighbors PHD)
3. general field work, remove small (4 -5") stumps, rocks, grade for seeding
4. NO hay making going on, but MAY need to cut fields
5. NO round bale handling, will deal w/square bales as needed
6. removing snow from driveway as needed
7. haul firewood out of the woods, maybe split firewood (have reasonably good woods roads to work from, as we had the land timbered about 16 years ago)
8. maintain woods roads for wood gathering and horse riding
9. maintain riding ring, mostly smoothing surface
I have dealers, nearby (in order of proximity), for Kioti, JD, BobCat, MF, NH. There are other dealers, but the dealers selling these brands are the ones that I have gotten good word-of-mouth reviews about (except BobCat, I just went there because I read that these tractors were rebadged Kiotis).
My purchase target date is in the Aug/Sep time frame, unless, of course, some incredible deal appears on a used tractor somewhere. Hopefully, by that time, you guys will have converted me into an "informed consumer".
So, there you have it, I consider myself to now be "properly introduced".
But, beware . . . . I know the address for these forums and I ain't afraid to ask questions . . . .
Thanx in advance for your patience and consideration of the questions that you are about to get from me
