Hi All,
I just joined and wanted to introduce myself. My name is Wendy and my hubby and I just retired and bought our first farm. Yeah - I know, should have done it years ago, but you know how thing go!!!
Anyway, we are now the proud owners of a 22 acre farm on the side of a hill. It has Honeoye Loam, which is very stony, but does a great job of holding the water!! There are seasonal springs on the property and the tillable areas are on different planes, the largest being about 10 acres..
Right now we are trying to hay some of it with a scythe and a rake... Not easy work... We had a local farmer come in and plow and disk an area for a garden, but the weeds are getting the upper hand. We are trying to keep up with it with a rear-tined tiller, but that is nor easy with all the rocks. We have to take a sledge hammer with us to dislodge the rocks that the tiller picks up!!
We are looking for a tractor that will allow us to plow, plant and harvest the fields. I was told that about a 55+ hp would be a good size. Due to the hills, I am looking for a wide front tractor. Our budget is about $5k and we are hoping to get a FEL with that... Neither of us has ever owned a tractor before, so we are just starting out search..
We are looking fo the tractor to do the following:
plow ( areas not plowed in well over a decade)
disk the areas
bush hog - we have areas that are not good for planting and too rough for the lawn tractor..
maybe later: a baler, tedder and cultivator...
Is there anything else that I would need to get started???
Wendy
