Great Horned Owl

This is good thread, and a bit different than the usual. Thanks to the OP for starting it. It's not quite perfect because it doesn't say anything about Mom, trains, prison, or getting drunk.

When we went to an owl presentation they said owls don’t have a sense of smell so they will kill skunks. They said a lot of times you smell a skunk you are smelling an owl that got sprayed.

Or a fox. They smell very much like skunks.

You forgot dogs. Country music often includes the dog.

Good point, you should never forget the dog. My comment above was a line from an old David Allen Cole song.

am almost finished building an owl house as a present for a relative living in Colorado.
After I explained that they need to mount this at least 15 feet up, which my super capable relative can do,
I then asked what size owl. I have hole saws up to 5 inches. The big owls call for a 6 inch hole, but someone mentioned some
cute and friendly small owls. So if one is going to build an owl hotel in Colorado (I also made sure they don't have small pets...)
what owl species is most needy here? My friends are consulting an ornithologist locally but I haven't heard back yet.

stairs installed both outside and inside, bottom is hinged and pinned for annual cleaning. Do owls need that like other birds?
do owls poop in their own homes? yuk

The Great Horned Owl uses vacated nests from other birds and such, they do not build their own nests, not sure about other types of owls.

I have only been reading about the GHO's so far.

Lots of info on the ole interweb tho
