Gravely 812
I would like to know if the PTO Clutch Assemble off a 812 Gravely has some kind of lining on the outside edge that goes into the Cups that are worn out. If there is suppose to be a lining can it be reconditioned and where might I have this done and how much would it cost? Thanks

I have 3 Gravely 800 riders and have not had to replace PTO clutch yet. My understanding is that changing the cone is dangerous and difficult and the recommended fix is to replace the whole assembly, I think it was $250 several years ago.

Gravely parts lookup

Select Gravely in the pull down near the upper left (it comes up Ariens) to help with part numbers if you don't have the parts manual.

You can get most manuals (pdf downloads) from OldGravelys.Net: Gravely Manuals

One of the many Gravely parts sources at Gravelyparts.com

I see the PTO stuff on page 8, looks like prices have gone up ($399 for whole kit)...

Ebay is a crap shoot, you don't know if you're getting a PTO clutch with life left or a worn out one... if you use eBay, just be sure to check seller feedback and ask questions before bidding (of course you already know this)

Good luck.

It isn't the clutch that is dangerous, it's the spring that is the danger. Dealers such as Richard's have a tool for removing and installing the spring and retaining rings safely. Current red springs are rated at 1000 lbs while the blue is rated at 800 lbs. Both can put out an eye if not handled correctly. If you ship your old one to Richard, he will install the new one for you.

I spent money on having my PTO clutch relined. It was a waste of money. The material used by the reline shop was the too soft and too thick. In the end I just bought a new one. Given that clutches last 30 years or more, the $300 price tag isn't bad.
