Gravel nomenclature

I need help. There appears to be a plethora of designations for rock and crushed rock that vary from region to region.

Would someone to be so kind as to describe some of these designations.

I think of gravel as rock that has been crushed with the size determined in inches. Rock that has not been crushed is refered to as pit run and again the size determined in inches.

Hmm. We always referred to gravel as round and under 2". Stones were round and over 2". Anything round over a foot was a either a boulder or dodo bird egg /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Gravel was graded by size through screens.

Crushed stuff was rock. It also was graded by size through screens.

"Gravel makes poor driveways because it is round. When you drive over it, your tires push it to the sides. Crushed rock is jagged, so it tends to lock together. I wish I'd never used gravel in the drivway", dad said, as he shoveled it from the sides back towards the middle. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Egon,

Try a website for the government organization that build roads
up your way. My Father in Law retired from the Department of
Transportation here in NC and we talk about this sort of thing
from time to time. The quarries that supply your government
with road building materials will follow the Gov'ments standards.
One would think these would be at least national standards but
who knows. If you find out what the "state" requires you should
be in good shape to spec out material.
