Asphalt! Sorry Danny, couldn't resist though if I could afford it I sure would do it /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Usually use Calcium Chloride or tree sap. In our area you have to get a permit from the county to put anything down on the gravel roads.

I moved to Washington. The rain keeps the dust down really well. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

cowboydoc - Thanks. Where should I go look for Calcium Chloride? I really don't need a whole lot. It's actually not for the driveway, it's for the gravel under my carport. Actually, the main reason I want to put something on it is not really even for the dust. I just asked the question that way because that's what I figured people would be familiar with. The main reason is that I want something that smells bad to cats and I knew that people have used something on gravel to keep the dust down and was wondering what it was. The %$*&^%@!!$#* worthless pests are digging in the gravel and crapping in it! I don't have it packed down real good yet, all I've done is drive over it bunch of times. I've used ammonia, which seems to work, but it evaporates too fast and doesn't last long. I'm beginning to think my .22 is the best solution to this problem, but if I can avoid that I'm willing to try!

The claim is that anti-freeze works well with cats. As long as you can get them to drink it. The bird lovers will thank you for taking care of (or helping) with that problem too. I don't think it works as efficient as the .22, but traps work also.

Now the question is sure different the second time around than "What do we do with gravel driveway dust?". I drive slow. Would like to asphalt, but like the gravel in the winter time. For the carport, just lay down some concrete.

Antifreeze also 'works well' with almost any animal that drinks it. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif So, if you also have animals that you care about, i.e., family pet, I'd opt for the 22 caliber solution for the cats since traps don't discriminate between wanted and unwanted animals either. BTW, the place I buy horse feed from also sells CaCl.

Re: Gravel driveway dust(cat poison)

I would agree with you there. I didn't mean to imply that it was specific to cats. I wonder if mice will drink it? Anyone have any resource information on animals imbibing on antifreeze? I have a strong suspicion that this is more a fear tactic than anything else, but will be interested in knowing of any documentation of its effects on animals (cause I could be wrong). /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Before this gets in to a discussion about animal cruelty or something, let me point out that as much as I'd like to, I'm not going to kill the cats (at least not on purpose). They are my kids cats. I hate the cats and wish I'd never gotten them, but I don't want to do anything that would upset the kids.

The reason for this post is to find out if there is something that I can put on the gravel to keep the cats out of it. I've seen people spray stuff on gravel to keep the dust down and I wondered what it was and if it would smell bad to cats. I thought about putting old motor oil on it, since I don’t want anything to grow there anyway. But, I don't know what to spray it with. Oil is probably too thick for my pump sprayer that I use for spraying Roundup.

This will eventually get poured with concrete, but that won't be until late summer at the earliest. I need a way to keep it from turning into a cat litterbox in the meantime.

Re: Gravel driveway dust(cat poison)

Ethelene Glycol based antifreeze IS a liver toxin. It definitely kills, and it doesn't kill kindly.
The antidote is grain alcohol, vodka is an excellent antidote, most catshow people carry mini bottles of vodka at shows because certain a~~~es have taken to squirting EG antifreeze into cages at shows.
Poisoning varmints outside isn't a good policy cause predators will take advantage of the weakened varmint, and consume it. This leads to poisoning of everything up the food chain.
Trapping, is also a nasty way to go, unless you use a live trap, so you can releast the neighbor's pet, or even your own pet.
Calcium Cloride is a dangerous way to go too, especially if you have a well.
Used fryer grease is an excellent substitute for Calcium, and you can get it free.
If your concern is the carport, why not use dirtcrete?
