Has anyone had to replace the shaft seal on their mid PTO yet? Mine is leaking and I have not even use it yet. the dealer only demostrated the blower that they put on last week. I am wondering if this is going to be a constant problem because it is at the very bottom of the oil sump.

I'd turn the PTO on to make sure the rubber seal "wears" onto the shaft. There should not be a leak but no harm in turning the PTO on for a few minutes to see what happens.

I was told when I got my tractor that you should keep a layer of grease on the outside of the PTO shaft down near the seal.. under the cover.. to prevent the outside of the seal from drying out. It also is a good idea to run the thing every few weeks for a few minutes just to make sure it's limbered up. It shouldn't have to "seat".. or wear in though.

Same advice from the dealer about the hydraulic seals on the 3pt, loader, backhoe.. any implements.. they can dry out if they are not coated with grease on the outside. I actually had a seal on a loader cylinder develop a leak where the lip of the seal had curled out during a cylinder extension after about three weeks of no-use.

Oh oh. I've never turned on my mid pto (L3410), much less greased the outside seal, in 3 years. That said, I guess I realized that things need to be moved around occasionally, as both the seat adjustment and 3ph lower/raising speed knobs do become ornery if not tweaked every month or so. No leaks, but I think I may do a little preventive maintenance this weekend.

I had a leak on my L3010 after about two years that I thought was the shaft seal. The dealer fixed it under warranty. He said it wasn't the shaft seal but was the gasket sealant that seals the whole Mid-PTO assembly. He could tell the sealant wasn't applied properly during the initial installation. I haven't had any problem since he cleaned it up and applied new sealant. It was a pretty simple repair.

No such thing as a minor repair involving the Mid-PTO.. at least not on the L-series. The first thing you have to do is drain the entire Hydraulic Oil reservoir.. 10 gallons or so! The actual repair was probably easy.. but getting to the point where you can take the assembly out of the tractor is a pain.

I would do the repair myself but it is under warrenty, so let the dealer do it . He is the one who installed it and the blower. draining the oil is no biggy, just need 3 /5gal pails.
