Hi all - I've searched everywhere I could and cannot find the answer to this question...

I have two lengths of similar chain, each with a similar grab hook at each end (2 chains, 4 grab hooks). If I want to connect them, do I connect the hook from chain 1 to a link on chain 2? Or do I connect the hook on chain 1 to the hook on chain 2?

In other words, can two grab hooks connect to each other safely?

(I'm trying to be precise in how I lay out this question bacause my brother is going to pick the quality of the question to death if he doesnt get the answer he thinks is right..... brothers....)

Hook to chain. Grab hooks often won't even engage each other more than a little bit.

On all the chains I have with grab hooks the hooks do not couple or connect fully with each other. The grab hooks are meant to grab a link of the chain. to connect the chains together connect the grab hook to the chain not the other hook.

Most "chain" hooks have the size (i.e., 3/8, 1/2 etc.) stamped on them...the "slot" of the hook is sized to grip a link of the stated size chain...

When I connect two chains - I connect the hook of one chain to a link on the second. Reason - normally the hooks will not grab & hold each other. Hooks are normally designed to grab on to links and not other hooks. AND I see no difference on whether chain #1 is hooked to chain #2 or vice/versa. If I'm going to use the two chains, hooked together, for more than one pull - I will use wire around the hook/link attach point to keep them from falling apart. Hope this helps.

BTW - welcome to TBN.

As already stated, Hook to Chain always with "grab" style hooks, with slip hooks you can get away with Hook to Hook.

Also, you might want to check out the new style "Twist-Lock" grab hooks we sell, guaranteed not to come apart!

Thanks all. Happy to know the answer. Sad to know my brother was right... Again... He had me wire the connections together.

On a lighter note, the assembly easily unstuck the tractor. (Yep, I got it stuck, not my brother; but it was him who almost burned down the barn last weekend :)

Haven't yet, but we'll keep trying!

I usually take one chain and hook the grab hook back on that chain, making a small loop, then hook the grab hook of the other chain to the center of this loop. It keeps the other hook from catching on things.
