The money difference between the two tire seems to not be much. But before I say I need Agri tires I thought I better ask you guys/gals.

My use is pulling discs, tilling, and plowing in a field. I was told Ag. does better in mud, but Indus will last longer.

I need your opion regarding the two tires

Agriculture Tires Vs. Industrial Tires

Which ones would you recommend for my use and why?

Thanks

Chuck

PS. This forum has save me so many times from making a wrong decision. Thanks to all of you

Sounds like pure agricultural use for you. If you are not going to be doing any finish mowing or operating on lawns/lands that you don't want to be torn up, then Ag tires would be the choice here (R1).

(R4) Industrials, are easier on the land, but will not provide as much traction - a common compromise.

If you are doing mostly ground engagement, farm type stuff, I would not hesitate to go Ag.

For the uses you stated i would think you would be better off with the AGS! I have r4's on my b2400 and they are great for MY USES.

I have found that for field work with ground-engaging equipment, R1 (Ag) tires are definitely the way to go. Most of my work with my L3130 is in fields/woods on slopes with all types of terrain and my R1 tires get me into (and out of) some pretty tough situations. They have great traction and give your tractor lots of pulling power, but as a result they will tear up the ground especially when it's wet or you're getting a lot of resistance from your ground engaging implement. If you're not used to them you have to be observant because they'll dig really quickly. A couple of times I was doing FEL work and trying to work a stump out, and before I knew it the Ags had dug in almost to the axles!

From the description of your projects, tearing up the ground with your tires is only going to help what you are doing:) I'd definitely go with the R1 tires.

I'm also trying to decide between R1's and R4's on an M-series. For discing, tilling, and plowing I'd say that the R1's are definitely the way to go.

But for me I'll also be doing FEL work, maintaing roads, mowing and so on. I like the fact that the R4's are wider, last longer, but are still pretty aggressive.

What about tractor stability? It seems that the R4's are wider and also smaller diameter so the tractor would have a wider and lower stance.

So, for all around use, not just field work, would R4's be a better choice?

I think R4 Industrials are a great all-purpose general tire. They give good traction (not as much as R1 Ags) but don't tear up the turf as much as R1s. As far as R4s lasting longer, I'm not too sure about that. As far as Chuckcoug is concerned in particular, you can get R4 Industrials on the M5040 but it will be a slight hassle. You can't just change the tires to fit on the same rims. R4s aren't available in the size of the standard rims. You would have to change the rims to 16.9-24 R4s from 14.9-28 R1s and thus would have to reprogram the speedometer by changing the travel speed coefficient. It's not really that difficult but would either take a special order tractor or your dealer changing the entire wheels. I seriously considered R4s for my M7040 but changed my mind for exactly this reason. Otherwise I would've definately gotten them.

I will be doing all sorts of work including pasture mowing. That's why I had considered R4s. With your listed applications in mind, I would just stick with the R1s if I were you.

I think I'd go with the ag tires also.

I think Ags are a no brainer for the OP. As far as R4's giving more stability, that's probably a mixed bag. First, most Ags come on rims that can be configured to provide extra width. Second, traction is often a major component to stability on hills, etc.

For your use, the R4 would not be good. They only give about 1/3 to 1/2 the traction of R1's. In the mud the don't self clean. That means in a couple revolutions, you have slicks and no traction.

R4's are better at puncture resistance, lower impact on the lawn, usually have higher load capacity an wear longer. But, for field work, ags are the way to go.

I use my tractor for the same thing you use your tractor for and I have R1's. I have yet to see a farmer in this area with 4's on their machines.
