I have a pair of nesting geese on the pond, been there close to 2 weeks I suppose. Momma stays on the nest while papa stands guard. Today I noticed a dead raccoon floating in the water. I got it out of the water and I couldn't find any trauma or cause of death.

I'm thinking one or two things..... Raccoon was rabid therefore weak and vulnerable and tried for an easy meal w/ the goose and during the fight the goose or geese were able to drown it. Or, the geese simply won the battle by drowning it protecting their nest.

I just can't imagine a goose winning a fight against a raccoon but I guess anything is possible......is it possible?

I would bet it is, been chased by a goose and they are persistent!! Even though a coon can swim fairly well, I don't think it has the upper hand on a PO'd goose.

Or the coon wasn't wearing a life jacket:D Either way I'd burn it or otherwise dispose of it, "just in case"

I could believe a goose or a nesting pair could take out a raccoon. The Geese do have a size advantage and if two of them were after one raccoon I would not want to be the masked bandit. :D

If the fight went into the water the raccoon was really at a disadvantage.

We have localize Geese around here that are a PITA. When they are on a nest territorial is not strong enough of a word to describe them. More like terrortorial. :D

Geese have nested in our parking lots as well as near the buildings which can make getting INTO work interesting. A coworker say a guy come to work on a motorcycle. As the motorcycle was driving through the parking lot a goose was flying behind the motorcycle trying to hit the drivers helmet.:D

Once the guy parked he then had to run the Goose Gauntlet while dodging the Goose Mines. :D

Later,
Dan

was it young coon?

Eh, not that young but not a big ole one. Their nest is right on the waters edge, so I'm guessing the fight (if there was one) took part in mostly water and it drowned. These guys aren't bothering me, I've worked on the tractor around the pond and all is good. Although I can't get to close to the nest because its on the far side where I have no access to due to marsh.

I have a 90lb Chesapeake bay retriever that would run from our toulouse/african cross, and he loves to retrieve birds. My wife would carry a stick with her in the yard just in case that goose came near. We just sold him off after he finally went after her and hitting him twice pretty hard before he backed off. His mom used to drown Peking ducks for fun, until her untimely demise. I can see a pair drowning a coon pretty easy
