UT-OHI evicted a huge wooly bear caterpiller from the house yesterday. The fact that he was trying to get inside combined with the fact that he was all black makes me fear that this will be a wicked winter. Is your snow equipment ready?

Chris

I remember an “ old guy” telling me years ago, if wooly bears crossed the road left to right it would be a cold winter, if right to left a mild winter. I asked him that didn’t depend on which direction you were traveling, he mumbled something and walked off.

winding down projects at work and trying to show how to do things to the right people. Not much interest in learning so I am backing off on that.

Phil have you thought about how much you are going to ask for consultations? My wife's company has several mostly retired people who work on a contract basis. They drag down some very nice money. Hope you won't have to work for free.

56 and damp cloud cover, going to 74.

Prayers said for Buppies' team and Ron's neighbor.

Ron, nice new gun...hope you get to shoot it soon.

Mostly, congrats on the new record setting nap. :)

Thomas, I've had the same thing happen with game cams that get activated by blowing branches or vines. Frustrating.

Don, I loved the Whipper story. Yesterday we were driving very slowly on a dirt road near the mountains and saw a small terrier pushing its neck down on what I guess was a pile of coon poop...over and over again, like the most pleasure imaginable...we stopped, hoping it would finish and walk off, but it was having too much fun. I'm sure the folks in the house up in the woods were about to get a surprise when he went home.

Speaking of bathing the Whip, we stopped at a TSC on our trip and saw they had a "Pet Washing station"...looked through the glass door and saw a complete room with stainless steel sinks and counters dedicated to bathing dogs, etc. Pretty cool...they also had 3 models of tractors out front for sale...Yanmars from 19 to about 30HP with small FELs on front....UTVs, too. I haven't been to "our" TSC in months, but pretty sure none of that exists.

We were up in the foothills looking at more barn quilts, and enjoying a nice day outside at a winery where we had a picnic lunch. Quilts on the barns are hard to see without zooming in. Second pic is our picnic view of the ruins of an old 1814 home designed by Thomas Jefferson.

48°F and foggy this morning, going up to 78° today. Still no rain for the foreseeable future.

We ditched our land line at home last year. The only times we'd used it for years was to order pizza or try to find our misplaced mobile phones. We don't miss it at all.

I like those Ruger Wranglers, Ron. I wouldn't mind having one ... if it weren't for yet another stupid Illinois gun law, the Melting Point Law, which prevents it's sale here. Ran into the same issue a few years ago when I tried to buy an EAA Bounty Hunter convertible .22LR/.22WMR single action revolver. :censored:

Glad things are falling in place for you, Drew.

What's a Melting Point Law?

What's a Melting Point Law?

It's essentially a law intended to prevent the sale of "Saturday Night Specials" in the state. Basically, if a firearm will melt or deform at less than 800°F, it's unlawful for sale in the state. This includes most cast frame handguns, like the Wrangler and the Bounty Hunter.

Not sure how it's still relevant with the advent of polymer frame guns, but somehow they have remained exempt.

Good morning all -55 going up to 79-sunny and more like September weather
Yesterday- just a trip to farm store to pick up some fall food stuff they bake.
Today-should have time to BBQ the oak stump

Thomas - Time lapse photo of that pine branch :)
TXDon - Happy birthday to your Mom! and condolences on your cousin
Ron - prayers for your Dr. neighbor
RNG - good find on the EGR - smog systems were hit and miss for so many years and still causing problems- on my wife's BMW her thermostat has a heating element to help it open faster, and that feeds back to the computer-so a $10 part is now more than $200!
Wng- those pictures are great-where was the TJ house ruins?
Drew- So many wineries have opened around New Hope-not the best wine, but fun to go to (also microbreweries and distilleries).

Stay safe and be well

Good morning to all! Low of 46, going for 82. A mini heat wave for the weekend, highs back up around 88 for Sat / Sun. No rain chances as usual.

Yesterday's trip into town was a bust .... for me anyway. Two places that specialize in making hydraulic hoses were well over double what I could order them online for. On the way home, I called NAPA, who everyone praises for making hoses.... they were over 3 x the cost.... so ordered them online. Found a set with angled swivel fittings, higher PSI ratings, and 6" longer for $53 including shipping!

My neighbor was far more successful getting his hydraulic extension hose made. He was able to get a 12" extension with the fittings for $17.... ??? They must have liked him better....

Ron, I purchased this top link from Agristore, they have free shipping and the best price for one with the check valve.
Category 1 Hydraulic Top Link: 18 1/8" - 26 3/8" | AGRISTORE USA

We will try to get the neighbors 50 hour service completed today, hopefully we left Murphy in town yesterday.....

Rng, hope you get to the bottom of the EGR issue. Difficult at best to trace and eliminate all the possible culprits. When I had the garden tractor apart, I seriously considered rewiring the entire tractor to get rid of all the safety switches and sensors. Too bad you can't just do that on the Vanagon....

All my "repair" projects are currently on hold until all the pieces/ parts get delivered.

Drew, sounds like your new plan is coming together. When is your 'big move' up north?

Ron, as usual, over the top with another fantastic picture. Thanks for sharing.

Everyone have a great day!

62F and "fair" (partly cloudy and somewhat overcast) @ 10:00, headed up to a high of 79F.

Four more days of nice weather before the rains and the big cool down comes. Peak fall foliage here about 4 weeks away.

Got weeds cut down in circle yesterday with FS 66 first thing, then mowed compost/wood lot and east side yard and a little bit of the back and west side. Decided to leave the rest of it go for another week as it isn't really all that long.

Discovered while mowing that ... someone ... mistook their day lilies for weeds when they were weeding the small planting bed at the southeast corner of the house ... Fortunately, they covered them with some actual weeds after they pulled them ... so they weren't exposed to the sun. The good news is that I was able to rescue them (three clumps worth) and stuck them in a bucket of water to loosen the dirt so that I could split them. The other good news is that after splitting them we'll probably have about 40 (or more) sets.

The bad news is, although splitting and transplanting them was part of the overall plan, I wasn't ready to do it at this point ... and I don't really have the area where they are going prepped ...

Got the area around one lilac (northwest, by driveway) weeded, mulched, watered and deadwood pruned.

Was unable to locate accessory plug for sprayer ... :(

Removed MMM and installed FEL.

Agenda for today:

Split day lilies.

Move WB up to driveway between upper and lower front lawns.

Install box blade and shrub/stump bucket.

Transplant several good sized oak trees.

Pull rebar stakes next to previous transplants.

Hope everyone has an enjoyable, productive, and safe day ...

rv dealer owner confirmed (in writing...) he will be here Friday Oct 9 to pick up my rv. I will then hop in car, go to bank and deposit check, then head to brother's home
in Markham VA for night. He has all my winter clothes...Then off again early Sat morning for home in Solebury PA, where I'm meeting landlord at noon, and truck/trailer with furniture will show up at 2pm. Asked for help from friends, likely my first wife and husband among others will show up to help. House is going to be mighty bare, quite the furniture shopping expedition planned for following week.
Foodshopping Sunday morning and then Comcast first thing Monday morning to hook up internet/cable/tv. At least I have Mifi until then

made another quick trip back downtown to Best Western, rented a room for my friends coming down with truck/trailer, got that crossed off the list. Making good progress.

I follow all the conversations about guns with interest. Now a different kind of interest being a life long pacifist. Funny, I don't think I could even put a hand gun in my hands, would freak me out.
But a long rifle or a shot gun, no problems. I love to target practice and think guns are very interesting from a tech standpoint. I sold my nice .22LR and my shotgun with the house, actually gave them to my neighbor. Growing up in country, fully understand need for guns due to bad critters. Maybe some day I'll get a 20G shotgun with rubber pellets.
