Hey All,

Please bear with me as this is my first time attempting to purchase a new tractor and it is kind or uncharted territory for me.

I have a quote from a dealer on the following:
  • John Deere 2038R
  • Loader
  • HD Bucket
  • Wheel Weights
  • Wheel Spaceer
  • Quick Hitch
  • Post Hole Digger & 9" Auger
  • 72" Mid Mower
  • Rear Tiller
  • Rear Blade
  • Premium Light Package

I'm getting another quote from a different deal to compare. But right now I'm at 19.23% off their MSRP on the total package.
  1. Is this a good deal?
  2. Or should I be figuring a discount off the price they are quoting me for the best deal?

Additionally there will be a military discount of I believe $150.

I take it that the incentives are already figured into the above discounted price?

Also, what about sale tax and a ballpark delivery fee if I purchase in a neighboring state (I'm in OH with a possible purchase in PA, WV, or KY)? Anyone know how this is handled?

Be VERY careful with JD's incentives. They can be conditional and only apply to cash purchases or third party financing. If you finance through them, those may all go away. The military discount is only if you're a member of their rewards program at a certain level based on past purchases, though there is an automatic one step bump up.

Sales taxes will be due no matter which state you buy from. It's only a matter of whether or not they collect it for you or whether you have to declare and pay your state directly.

What you should be doing is comparing the same type of machine and equipment options from other brands. You'll probably find you can get an equally capable machine/package for a lower overall price.

I have looked at the Mahindra and it is close but not as refined as the JD. Also I have looked at Kubota and really didn't like it.

If your getting the Wheel Spacers, get the Fender Extensions too.

Might be simpler if you just post an out the door price pre tax to compare. 20% off tractor is easy to calculate- 20% off implements is a little tougher....knowing implements are well overpriced msrp to show big savings makes comparison shopping tougher.

As to tax - Ohio is simple, you owe your counties rate. If delivered to your door - selling dealer is responsible to collect it, regardless of their physical location.

There are at least 3 good Deere dealers your way. The biggest - a chain in your town isn’t bad in my experience - gives good prices in my experience for cash, but no negotiation - feels like they make money on volume and service/parts. I have talked but never bought from them. I found similar prices after talking to another dealer whose operation is smaller...just liked the personal service better there. But I see nothing wrong with the guys who share initials with John Deere.

My local dealer (JD [Ag-Pro as of today]) is ~$400 more than the least. However, the least has an ~$200 delivery charge. So now we are ~$200 difference. Additionally, my local dealer in now willing to throw in a block heater and fender extensions for free.

ask him if he can put on something that shifts the 4wd in/out easier that lever is a pain in the butt, only thing i really dont like about my 2038R that and the chincy feeling tilt/loose steering wheel - the mid mount mower takes some getting used to, it will bind up easily on the chassis going over uneven ground

BKmollen,

Personally I think that you might have a very good deal. As others have stated, do check the fine print. My two cents: I purchased a 2038r about a year ago and I absolutely love it. Like you I planned to buy the HD bucket. However, after taking a closer look I purchased the high capacity bucket instead and saved a fair amount of money. My main reason for looking at the HD bucket was the grab hooks on the bucket. Instead I got a pair of chain hooks welded to the bucket. Additional, I previously owned a 2005 JD2305 (hence the moniker) and not once did I ever find a load it could not lift, but I frequently found loads too big to fit into the bucket (I had the 53 bucket). On my new tractor I went with as high capacity bucket as possible and it has already paid me back. I often haul bulky loads like logs and branches that don稚 fit well in smaller buckets.

This setup has worked very well for me. The chain hooks cost only $75 and I have used them and they worked quite well. I also really like having the larger bucket than the HD bucket.

All of this is just is based on my personal experience but is still just my opinion. You may be better served by having the high capacity bucket, but only you can make this decision. Whichever way you go, the 2038r is a great tractor, your discount is awesome and I think you will be quite pleased. If you have any further questions, please don稚 hesitate to ask.

I paid no sales tax on my 3032E in Kansas because it was for Ag use only. If I move 1 hay bail a year it qualifies for Ag use. So it is different in each state. Ask about it. I think I paid $150 for delivery from Missouri into Kansas. My whole package on my 3032E in January 2014 was right at $20k for the tractor, loader, brush hog, rear blade, loaded tires and quick hitch.
