As I mentioned before I have 6 acres to mow and landscape. With my budget I can either get a JD 790 / LT2800 with FEL/Bushhog or get a subcompact with FEL/BH& Mower such as BX23/GC2310. Since I don't have much experience with tractors, I am counting on you guys to lead me to the right path.

Will you be doing a lot more landscaping than mowing right off? Maybe get the subTLB (BX23/GC2310) Then if the mowing DID get to be too much for it, and the landscaping chores were far less. sell it and get something in a CUT.

I would buy for the long term. For the heavy stuff in the beginnning you could rent something larger. Then when you are down to just mowing you can use the long term smaller rig.

Just my opinion.

My first though was go big. The ole saying " There is no replacement for displacement " Then I saw you had a BH listed with the smaller tractor. My BH is my most used implement. I don't know how I got along without for so many years. I say go with the BX 23 with BH. Just keep in mind the smaller tractor will take longer to get things done. Also the smaller tractor will be less stable while trying to move trees etc. due to less weight. I have lots of 70 foot tall 14 inch diameter poplar tress to wrestle with, that is why I went with a larger tractor.

I started off with a 12 hp Gravely about 4 years ago. I knew from experience with it that I needed only 15-18 hp for the additional tractor work that the Gravely couldn't do: e.g. FEL work and a bigger bush hog and a PTO generator. So, I discovered this forum and started reading, and asked questions on some stuff.

In October, thanks to Social Security savings and return of a partnership fund, I bought a JD 4010 with FEL and 4' bush hog after driving the 4010 and a 2210 and a BX 1830 and B 7510.

One other criterion that I had was for it to fit underneath my garage doors, the standard approx. 80" height in the opening, with a fixed ROPS, as I knew that I'd likely forget to lower one of those folding ones. Also, I have to run the tractor down 2 or 3 tree-lined paths where a tall ROPS would cause problems.

The dealer I bought from had a nice, steep hill to try the tractors out on. The 2210 would not stop and then back up the hill, midway. The 4010 did fine; its rear tires are a 1/2" or so wider than those on the 2210. Also, the 4010 ROPS was 1" shorter, and it had cruise control and dual brakes plus 4 or 5" more ground clearance. It was also $300 less than the 2210. The 2210 is a good value for folks who need the additional hp, but I didn't.

Didn't like the treadle peddle on the BX 1830. Also, frankly it felt like a toy and not much bigger than my Gravely. The B 7510 was a little more tractor but with the same treadle peddle, with the swivel underneath the boards is all. Reverse end of it was back against the seat. Dual brakes were up in front of the forward part of the treadle. For some reason, they have a clutch for the HST on the left. Had a dreaded folding ROPS, too, plus TOO BIG rear tires (but didn't seem as wide as those on the 4010, which has HUGEly wide turf tires on the rear). Same price as the 4010 but with 2 hp more. Dealer didn't know how to remove the side panels to the motor. Ones for the JD are simplicity itself.

Got same price for the 4010 from a JD dealer over the foggy mountain. Bought from dealer about 4 miles away. They set up the bush hog wrongly though. Got that right myself. Left off the FEL level indicator. Dealer furnished it and a 2nd key when I went back the last time.

PLENTY of power for going up my approx. 30-40% hill out back, 100' up, with bush hog a going. Also plenty for cutting 4' tall growth of grass/weeds in the meadows with the 4' bush hog, which works best with a chain for the top link. Had plenty of power yesterday running the 1951 soil ripper from a JD M (an 18 drawbar hp tractor). Was mainly traction limited if I tried to run the ripper deeper than the little plows (5-6" height).

JD doesn't have the proper starting technique in their owner's manuals and no glow plug light. You start it by turning to "start" with the HST in High (Low or PTO button on work, too) for 5 seconds. Then go to neutral. Starts immediately. Found this out on this forum.

Here's a pic with the ripper on it.

Do a search for 2210 and BH. Someone posted about getting a BH from a vendor (think maybe Curtis?) for the 2210. Bet this may fit the 4010 as well. These 2 tractors are very similar: the 2210 has some gearboxing at the ends of the rear axles that lower it 4 or 5 inches vs. the 4010's straight-out axles, drink holder instead of cruise control, single brake instead of duals. Their controls otherwise look identical, and the rear end of the machines appear identical, but with the 4010 having noticeably wider turf tires. Main things in favor of the 2210 are the inch control for the MMM and a bunch more hp (don't know why; 18.5 is enough; with Mobil 1, the 4010 will likely be 19 hp, as you get about 3% more hp and fuel economy).

subCUTs manufacturers rate their Hp at higher RPM, there isn't as much difference as it seems.

Kelly makes one for the Kubota, and maybe the Deere. Woods introduced one for sub-cuts several months ago but they are shipping the Kubota and New Holland versions first. I had a Green one on order for months and got sick of waiting and canceled it... it might be awhile.

I'd also vote with seeing what you will be doing long term. I bought a B7800 for some major landscaping projects I had in mind. Now that I'm almost done I realized how little I will be needing a post hole auger that can reach 42" footing depth, and a bigger loader. My future needs will be moving 5 yards of mulch a year plus other minor things.

Had I thought far enough in advance I'd have bought a smaller machine (with the backhoe), and rented big stuff as I needed it.

Features?
Well, for example /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif The BX23 w/the 60"MMM will give you a 60" finishing mower thats adjustable from the seat, an easily detachable FEL to do away with your wheelbarrow and utility cart, an easily detachable backhoe to make stump removal and hole digging a joy, a limited 3PH that'll work most estate sized implements and a 22hp engine thats fairly stingy on fuel usage. It will also do all this and not break the bank too! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Want Big?
If you need high ground clearance or need to work larger ground engagement inplements w/ finish mowing being 2nd'ary, then I'd recommend you move on up into the CUT line.

SubCUT=mower 1st, tractor 2nd.
CUT=tractor 1st, mower 2nd.

Good luck, again.....
