Need to glue up one joint for an electric outlet in her planting bed. I had a can of gray electrical PVC cement, but it's dried out. The big box store carries a small can of cement for $5. Knowing that it too will dry out, I'm reluctant to buy it. Thoughts on using regular plumbing pvc glue instead of the electrical specific product????

It's more of a solvent then glue. There is some transitional stuff that works for PVC and ABS so maybe they arn't too far apart. What about nail polish remover (acetone) or contact cement remover/thinner? Try on a scrap piece to see if it goes gooey.

EDIT, Sorry, I was thinking ABS. Not often I think about PVC for plumbing. Can't imagine it would be any different. If anything it might just be a formulation issue concerning potable water.

I've heard, but can't prove it, that the regular PVC glue affects the plastic covering of the romex. If you can be sure that the PVC glue doesn't come into contact with the plastc, it will work fine.

PVC is PVC. Read the product descriptions on the Oatey site, and you'll see the difference in some of the products is for the size of the pipe, and some is in either gray or clear. But they are all rated for potable water, pressure pipe, conduit and DWV.

PVC joint glue will work. Do not run Romex inside conduit. Strip the outer cover before putting it in conduit. Or just get THHN strand wire and run it.
As with everything don't go overboard with the glue. A little will hold a lot for a long time.

Is it a rule or code not to run Romex inside? I do it all the time to protect wire and it works. Is there something I should worry about?

Romex is covered in vinyl to protect the wires but holds the heat. Inside conduit the heat has no place to go and the wires will get hotter than in open air.
Licensed electricians will not run Romex in conduit. I cannot site the code on this but it is not done in practice.

I too would be curious about code. That would be a waste to strip romex. I have put romex in PVC conduit and buried it to avoid buying expensive direct bury romex. Not saying it's code though. I would be guessing that the jacket isn't temperature rated to be in a raceway. And a 14/2 romex might exceed conduit fill calculations for a 1/2" conduit.

This is the code ref regarding romex
300.9 and 334.12(B)(4) are your Code references.

A point to ponder. 2005 code requires romex to be run through conduit when it passes through duct work such as return air when the floor joist are used as the return air duct. The conduit must be sealed to the duct but not to the wire. In other words air must be able to flow around the wire.
