I don't see your problem. You still retain the file in gif format. It just a quirk of the file transfer/loading procedure that does the conversion. On my big Canon camera I take/keep most all pictures in a raw format. That way when I'm finished "massaging" them - I can keep the final picture in whatever format I want. And I still have the original in its raw format.
