There will be many people who suggest polyurethane but that is possibly the widest used and worst coat for a floor. Its basicly a surface finish of soft plastic that gets scratched very very easy.
Look up tung oil. It's an older finish and you dont need to completely sand..or sand at all to re apply another coat years down the line.
