The parts manual shows the boot fitting on top of the gear shift housing but does not show anything holding it in place. There is a circlip directly under it but I don't think the circlip has anything to do with the boot. It may be that you just stuff the edges of the boot into the inside edges of the gear shift housing. Thats the best I can figure.
You might want to cut the old one away and see how it fits in.
