Looking at manual attached for my 6' Tar River tiller, it says gear oil in side and center gearbox. I went to hardware store and got these two bottles. Look like the right stuff? For Side Gearbox says SAE 140W. Will this Penzoil SAE 75W - 140 work? For Center Gearbox, it says SAE 80W - 90, assuming this Penzoil 80W - 90 will work? thank you

I'm sure that's fine. Gear box oils are generally not very fussy choices, as long as they are thick enough, and you have satisfied that requirement perfectly.

In fact, it strikes me as just a bit... fastidious... yes, fastidious of them to call out a lower viscosity grade, once they've already called out a higher viscosity for another gearbox. I mean, seriously, is the oil not going to flow into the spaces it's needed? Is it really going to slow the engine down??? Curious how this lands on others here.

If it was me, I'd buy one or the other and use it in both.

rotary tiller gear box is low RPM, you can use both two type gear oil no problem.

No benefits in this gearbox application for synthetics.
I’d use the cheaper 80-90 or 90 weight.

Another data point and a question on this... Just bought a new Frontier (Maschio) RT3049 tiller from Deere and saved $200 by doing the final assembly myself. Dealer gave me 2 quarts of the same 75W/140 Deere branded gear oil.

My question is about the central gear box for the PTO differential... The oil level sticker was on TOP of the box and there is no vent hole mid-way up like I'd expect to avoid over-filling. And the top plug with a 4" dip stick has only about a 3/4" hashed fluid indicator at the bottom which seems too low. There's a hole in the dip stick about 1" from the top of the stick as well. The directions said put 1L of oil in this gear box which fills it entirely. So do you fill the darn thing 3/4", almost to the top (hole in the stick) or up to the top plug (full)? Or just half-way such as the way bushhog boxes usually need? Or none of the above??

I used 80/90 weight in my tiller gear box. Eighteen years and no failures. Tiller gear box oil is not under high stress. Mine had no half-way overfill plug but the top, fill plug, was vented.

Take those quart bottles back and get a gallon or better yet a 2 and a half gallon jug , that will last you a long time,

Well, the results are in. The top gear box on the RT3049 was filled up to about half an inch below top of the box and it vented a few ounces of gear oil out of the top on the first run today. So, either I'll run it again and see if it continues to spew oil out the vent hole on the top plug or drain an inch or so out if it annoys me enough. Tiller worked wonders on virgin ground though... Turned the top 4" or so into fluffy dirt and the composting layer on top of that should be about perfect come initial planting in late March here in GA!
