Hi everybody: I have to change the gear oil in the front axle of my L3830 and in the drive gear of the KX 71-3 excavator I have. The problem is I do not know where to buy it because every shop I went seems to have only store brand (Napa, Wall Mart etc) which I'm not sure I trust. Any recommendations? What everybody uses? Another small question: is Rotella T triple protection engine oil, which is rated CJ-4, good for the machines I have which are not tier 4 (low emissions). In other words is this oil usable in tier 3 older engines? Thanks.

I buy my gear oil at SAMS club in 5 gallon buckets, its a heck of alot easier with a pump and hose in most places

I just ordered some Amsoil Severe Gear Oil for my tractor and dodge ram 2500 truck.. Around here Walmart/Autozone/Advance auto/Tractor supply all carry brand name gear oil (75w90 or similar)..

I dont think you can go wrong using Rotella 15w40 in your tractor.. I have been using it in my truck and it will go in the tractor the next oil change.. Due to low usage in both I am not using a synthetic in either..

good luck

I can't help you with the gear oil, but I have a 2003 BX2200 with 640 hrs. on it and the only engine oil that has ever been used in it is Rotella 15/40. Absolutely no problems with it's useage.

I recently did some front end work and used the same hydraulic oil as the tractor hydraulics takes. (its a ford).
It was convenient, but I wondered about using the straight 90 weight gear oil, as a previous poster put in another thread gears need gear oil.Which makes sense to me.
I often thing maybe they have you use the hydraulic oil so you only have One product for everything on the tractor,I have used hydraulic oil in the same two kinds of tractors since 1980 but always felt that gear oil would have been better.

I use gear oil in the transmission and hydraulic oil in the rear end housing because that's what my manual calls for.

I would think gear oil should be easy to find in any auotmotive store. I use an 80-90 type that can be bought at Canadian Tire but obvioulsy that is in Canada.

For your L3830 you really should use either UDT or SUDT and not gear oil. UNLESS you are in the desert and plan on roading the machine in 4wd for long distances as a regular activity.

This is especially true if you are a cold area (32f or less during operations). The rock hard 90W won't be flowing too easily at those temperatures.

I can assure you that Wal-Mart and NAPA do not make gear oil. They're all made by a couple or 3 companies, and labeled with many different brands. As long as it meets your required viscosity and SAE specs, you can use any of it with confidence.
