Hello - The mower manual for my mid-mount 60" deck specifies use of SAE 90 API GL5 gear oil for the mower gear box. At Canadian Tire the only gear box oil was MotoMaster Formula 1 Premium Marine Gear Oil. It does have the SAE 90 API GL5 designation. Is it fine for me to use this in my mower gear box? comments? suggestions? thanks.

yes it would work, but as posted.. you can likely find a generic 90wt at other locations that will be a lil cheaper.

I use Amsoil Sever Gear since you fill and forget..PLus great rust protection, Ep rated for all the people whom love to have full throttle and hit PTO etc.

You marine will go okay at summer temps and the marine will have extra adds that may or maynot be needed for your app.

I am not a fan of generic fluid; but that is me. Ex, I ran sunper tech engine oil and it was poor; based on UOA.

I have 300+ hours on my 60" deck and fluid is mint. Or 350 in front diff. Well worth the price for me; love i at -25F (zero issue)...:licking:

:

were you going for extended changes or a regular interval of say... 3000m.. a good UOA around here costs a couple bucks less than an oil & filter and air filter change with supertech oil.. etc. Seems vs testing it, just better to change it... but that's just me.

My old dodge has been running supertech oil for the last decade... still running. this up coming oil change I've invested a buck fifty more and went to their high milage oil.. see how that does..

thanks Soundguy. sorry - I've got to ask, what are UOA and supertech ?

used oil anylysis and supertech is the walmart branded oil.. it's packaged by warren unilube.. a maker of many, many, many store and hose brand oils. it's not known as superior oil.. but it ain't gritty sludge either.. it's economical, and meets manufacturer specs as well as api grading classifications, and if used in accordance with regular change intervals.. it's fine.

if i was using supertech I'd never do a uoa.. the uoa would cost as much as the oil change :) .. better to just do the oil change.

uoa comes in handy if you have oil capable of doing extended drains, or if you want a baseline to see where something is at.. like looking at wear metals in an engine.

I use a premium ful synthetic oil in my diesel truck ..that's the kind of thing you do a uoa on.. where you are using 3+ gallons of il in a crankcase, and are paying near 100$ for the oil. at that point a 18$ uoa isn't a bad deal if you can see that you are able to stretch a change interval from say.. 3000 to 10000 miles.... on supertech oil.. ya just change it at 3000 :)

Thank you for the very complete answer, Soundguy. I appreciate it. Bought some Supertech 80W 90 GL-5 at Walmart yesterday. Dealer said 80W 90 GL-5 would be good.
