Looking, and really getting more confused. It sounds like the 2x4 is likely OK for what we need, but with the cost going up by $1000 from cx to ts to tx, are there any advantages of one over the other.

It all depends on your use and your budget. I was in the same boat before getting my TX. Here is what my feelings were and I now believe I made the right choice.

CX - seems too small, bed capacity in volume is limited
TS - gets up to a real sized machine, but engine is smaller than TX and has no oil filter. Oil filter should make it live longer.
TX - size and power seems just right.

I will say the oil filter access and the drain plug location make me cringe when time to drain and change, but other than that, I am very pleased with it.

Mainly used to haul the clean out of 5 horse stalls. But I use it a lot as well for general yard work, fencing and special projects - also great for relocating trailers.

I have the TX and it works great for me. I drove the TS and the lack of a rear suspension steered me away from that machine, even though a few friends of mine have a TS and have great service out of them. I went with the TX because of the rear suspension (even though it is limited travel) and the bigger engine (13 hp). I have loaded up my TX way past the 600 lb limit, up to 1100 lbs (I am not saying that anyone else should not follow John Deere's limit) and it did fine. I now have 600 hrs on my machine and it does not burn a bit of oil and the only thing I have replaced is the battery. Just FYI, you can order a oil filter kit for the TS gator for about $60 or so from a John Deere dealer...just look on e-bay. One more thing is that the oil filter is the same as my wifes Camry, that is less to stock for me. Hope this helps you in your choice of Gators.

I have owned a CX since 04 with no problems. It is real handy around my small orchard.
