Will a CX do OK with mud, gravel, high grass - or will I really need a 4x4?

I guess that will depend on how deep the mud gets. The differential lock on the CX will keep both rears turning, but if you are belly deep that probably won't be enough.

Our CX came with knobby tires and hasn't had any traction issues so far that even required locking the differential. It has handled some fairly steep terrain features pretty easily, but the ground surface was typically pretty stable - dirt with sparse grass & ground cover.
