Gator 825i No start after running out if gas

Need some help. The Grandkids ran the gator out of gas. (JD 825i) We filled the tank and noticed the fuel pump to be extremely loud. It simply would turn over but not run. I disconnected the fuel line at the farthest point and flipped the key on and its is pumping fuel and quiet.

Re connected the line and instantly the fuel pump is loud again. It did start however didn't run for long and quit again. Each time I take the line off it pumps and pumps quietly reconnect and its loud and starts with a real rough idle and then stops.

Does the system need to be reprimed? Or pressurized?

Personally it sounds like a downstream obstruction but running out shouldn’t do that?

I'm not sure but I think the 620i has a different fuel pump ?? However reading that yes its possible that the fuel pump may have picked up some junk when it was sucking the last few drops. I'll give blowing it out a try and thank you for the response.

Have you changed your filters? This sounds like there is an obstruction?

If the pump is quiet when not connected, then loud when reconnected it sounds like back pressure on the pump from an obstruction of some type, pinched hose, blocked filter etc.?

Does this make sense?

Makes sense..the thing that doesn't make sense is it simply was run out of gas.

Actually 2 filters ... a mesh type on the bottom of the fuel pump and one inline after the pump. I tore into it and have removed the pump, the mesh filter was clean. JD dealer seems to think that perhaps when the kids ran it dry they keep cranking and weakened the pump itself. Also stated the pump free flowing should shoot gas 2-3 foot out the line ... it is not doing that. Therefore, new pump, new mesh screen and new after pump filter going on this morning and then we shall see if we have it. BTW alot of stuff had to be removed just to get to the pump.

It's up and running ... sure enough the fuel pump. A little note for anyone who has to ever replace the fuel pump. JD Dealer quoted $393 seems there has been an upgrade to the fuel pump which also requires a new relay, holder, wiring harness, lower filter.

When I got there and started to compare yes the pump is a little smaller. 1/2" in length thus the reason they state "new holder" .. I asked the reason for the new relay and they simply couldn't give a straight answer and when I questioned how would I know if the relay is bad I was told "We've never see one fail" ... yes the wiring harness is different as well as the lower filter ... so I bought the pump, a piece of fuel line, 2 clamps along with two crimp on ends.

I used the hose at 1/2" longer to lower the pump to the bottom of the holding bracket and that put the pump in the right location. The filter snaps on and holds the pump into place on the bottom. I cut off the old wire harness, crimped on the new ends and plugged the wire on ... all is well and we are purring like a kitty in a milk parlor ... grand total parts $142.89

The actual pump itself is a cylinder thats a sealed unit .. its about 1.25 inch diameter by 3 inches long. No way to tear into it. Thats the part I replaced. I can only assume that when it ran empty the girls keep cranking and then when I got on I kept cranking and with no fuel it Weakened the actual pump to the point where it would not pump to the full potential
