Welp, one of the problems with collecting old engine drive welders. The gas tank on my 1954 Lincoln SA-200 Short hood rusted out:(. Even if you could find a replacement, who's to say it's not rusted inside too. So I took a sheet of 16-GA, and made a replacement tank. I tested the welds with soap and water. I bought a can of gas take sealer. So maybe this tank won't rust out in my life time.

When I worked at the tool and machine shop the head welder had a nice sideline business making custom tanks... some were quite elaborate for Motorhomes, Sailboats and such... even did a couple for equipment heading for the South Pole.

I've never seen anyone that could weld like he did... most were aluminum and some were stainless with the expedition tanks made of monel... the boss would let him shear up the material at work...

I admire guys like you that have the skills to fabricate just about anything.

Several years ago I built a 60-gallon farm gas tank out of aluminum. I cut the pieces out with my plasma cutter. I got an education on welding aluminum after cutting with a plasma.

Nice job, SA! Is that all tigged?

I'm not ambitious enough to build a new one. I'm going to try cleaning the rust best I can and resealing. :(

Yes all Tig welded. My biggest problem is, I have a structural welding back ground, so I'm not to good with thin material:eek:. At one point in my life, I thought 3/8-inch thick material was sheet metal.

Haha. Having no real welding skills and an AC buzz box on the farm for over 50 years, I tended to overbuild everything with materials too heavy to avoid burning through. :D

This is what I'm more comfortable building. :D

Looks nice! The TIG man at the shop uses aluminum, welds it up like a box, lets it cool for 10 minutes, and then drills the 1/8" pilot hole for the filler neck. If it whooshes when the bit breaks through he knows it is air tight.

I've resealed a lot of tanks with sloshing compound... superb results for over 20 years... the new reformulated gasoline turned the sealing compound into goo... not pretty... especially since I did 7 antique car tanks and several motorcycles and tons of small gas engines...
