Garage floor paint or epoxy????

I just had my shop built 24x30, deciding to either paint or epoxy the floor prior to moving in.... any pro's and cons would be greatly appreciated.

I would use neither. There is a clear concrete sealer that I have used with great results. Paint peals and epoxy is very expensive. This stuff you just roll on the concrete and it seals the pores and you are done. You can re coat it at any time after you sweep the floor clean. Oil will not penetrate into the concrete when you use this product.

The product that I used was made by Dri Lock, if I remember correctly. I can check tomorrow, since I still have a gallon left...

We built a shop about 6 years ago, and decided to put a two part epoxy on the new floor. It was a great idea- no problems, and cleaning is a snap. Dirty oil spills come right up, with a spray of 409 to finish the job so you can't even tell where it was. It was a finish that cost about $32/gallon, and my 24 x 32 shop took two gallons. Home Depot or Lowes, I can't remember which. Do it! The prep work on a new slab is minimal, compared to cleaning a used slab. Just follow the directions, and enjoy.

I would use what dusty said a clear concrete sealer. I used TK achro seal great stuff except for brake cleaner takes it off.

one thing is that most of the treatments require a 30+ day cure, epoxies I belive want a bit longer...

just letting you know that. there are a few "dry in" sealers that are made to coat a slab to assist/slow the drying process to make the slab harder. I just recently used some of this for a small shed I poured.

anyhow just letting you know

When I do my barn/shop/house I want to stain it and apply a clear coat. this also will require a finish to applied prior to it being dry if possable and also some after.

Go for the epoxy. More expensive and more difficult to apply - but, it is a near forever fix.

Want to see how it looks in use? Go to your local airport and see what they have on the floor of the shop hanger.

By the way, most tractor owners model their shops after airport shops. Every tool has a place, each is wiped down after use, all spills are immediately cleaned up, only one project at a time. Everything is completely cleaned up and all parts and tools put away after the completion of each project. No trash remains on the floor.

I know there was a nasty rumor going around a while back. Went something like this: "Yep, sore am glad I got that there new FEL. Now I can clean the shop floor sittin' down. Sore gonna beat making the kids use a snow shovel to clean out the shop." I'm sure there was no truth to it at all.

It is obvious that I am not one of "most tractor owners".....
