The fusible link at my starter wiring bundle blew with a loud snap when first hitting the starter after using glow plugs for about ten seconds. I replaced the fusible link with an in line fuse holder type system (30 amp capable) and a 20 amp fuse. Dash lights came on but fuse blew as soon as I tried the glow plugs, tried it twice. My operators manual says the fusible link is is 200 ampere, can that be accurate, 200 AMP???? The guage wire on the in line fuse was about the same size as the fusible link or bigger.
Thinking something in the glow plug relay (if there is one) might be wrong. Detailed help would be much appreciated.

Hello Howard, yes the rating would be 200 amphere
for this fusible link which is the last line of defense
so to speak.

I dont remember if this wire is 4 or 6 guage in wire size.

It may be the starter is shorting or sparking but
your dealer would know for sure.

I dont know if you would have room for a High amperage
shunt resistor in the same location but that would work too.

When you lose the fusible link its very big load that melts it and its possible the starter is shorting out.;)

First thing I would try is to jump the starter using a wire from the battery to see if it is locked up. If it turns, then it looks like it could be a short across the glow plugs (i.e. 12V at the top of the relay), although a glow-plug circuit short would blow the main fuse (40A in my L4200). I'd guess a locked-up starter.

I was not aware they are installing 200 Amp inline fuses for the starter. Every starter I have seen to date takes the POS feed from the battery to the starter solenoid. The rating for a glow plug fuse should be 50 Amps. All is not lost so lets see if we can find the bad component. If you test the starter remove the lead wire to the terminal on the solenoid and tape the end. Take a quality jumper from the POS of the battery to the same terminal of the solenoid. You also need to repair the inline fuse with something about 30 Amps. Put the battery Pos back on. All should be OK.
You should gets lights. Do not use the glow plugs as you are fused at 30 Amps.
Now comes the tricky part you should be able to have the starter engage the engine for a 1 sec try.If the starter wants to short out it will draw very high current or it might pull in.
On the glow plugs you might have weakened the original fuse and when you went to roll the the starter it just opened with a big bang.
The glow plugs could be either tested with a quick touch of jumper wire or ring them to NEG with a OHM meter.
If your starter was to blow up inside I believe it would have sounded like a bomb went off.
Use your judgement accordingly.

...the main fuse (40A in my L4200).

Hey JayC my L4200 has a 60 amp as the main ... that fuse feeds the fuse block and is in the charge circuit of the alternator... Mine could be a 60 because it is a cab tractor and has a few more electrical demands...

Craig Clayton is right... the starter current is NOT routed through that fuse, Ive never seen a starter fused on any engine...
Everything except the starter goes through that fuse... I doubt 20 amps will carry everything... KennyV

Thanks for the replies.
What I don't understand is if this is a 200 AMP fusible link wouldn't it have some heavy wire?
The wire diameter is small like regular 12V wiring not like a battery cable. And btw this tractor only has a 24HP motor.

Mine is definitely a 40A fuse. It sits in an in-line socket down by the starter on the main power line - that line comes from the starter +12V connection and runs everything - via the main fuse block, I guess. My tractor has a nice fat wire going from the battery to the starter, then the rest of the tractor is powered from the starter lug through a piece of ~14ga wire with the 40A fuse on it. I don't know if there is a fusable link in series with the starter on that fat piece of wire - I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

As you mentioned (and thanks for reminding me), I have a getto-fabulous non-cab L... don't need all that extra power for wipers, CD players, heater fans, back massage chairs, big screen TVs, or whatever else you guys put inside those high-falutin things. The only thing that actually uses power on my tractor is the headlights - not sure those work either....dang, I want a cab.

Ah but look at all the fresh air you are getting... especially this time of year...
&
You are right there is no fusible link on the main pos cable from the battery to the starter...
Have fun Jay... KennyV

Just wanted to let you guys know that it's fixed and running. Thanks for the input.
I just put a 30 AMP fuse in the in line holder and no more problems. Sooo, I guess my owners manual has a misprint.
