So I finally got around to changing the filters on the MF35 with a Perkins. These filters and canisters were horrible, perhaps 15 years old or older!! After cleaning the canister some I discovered why it had a slow leak, I thought it was gasket related. Well it seems the water mix in bottom caused major corrosion and a few pin holes.

This is a CAV filter unit, and some aftermarket systems use a can style filter with a glass bowl under it. Besides finding a good used unit or a new one, how could this be repaired? It appears it was repaired before with silver solder or some such around the drain bolt. I have even thought about jb weld just to try it. I have never silver soldered or brazed anything and could give that a try.

What do yall think? 20201105_123354.jpeg20201105_123403.jpegView attachment 67555620201105_114102.jpeg20201105_113941.jpeg

Re: Fuel system woes

If you're going to repair, I'd use solder. Clean it up and solder the holes shut.
If you really want to get fancy, cut the bottom dimpled/rusted area out and solder a washer in place..........Mike

Re: Fuel system woes

The MF 35 was a popular enough tractor there may even be after market replacements that look original for people doing restorations.

Maybe a good epoxy. There are some commercial fuel tank repair shops that use epoxy, but I do not know what kind they use. Maybe a little research on Google will bring results.

Replace it with something new. Time wasted jury rigging a fix is time you will never recover.

Re: Fuel system woes

I'll get a picture of the repair I did with a product called JB Weld TankWeld. Along with 4 coats of primer and about 5 top coats of some silverish color it should not leak for a while. But I have the filter in hand but when assembling and looking at the parts diagram mine are different. I have most all of it, it is just improvised. Example: #12 in the diagram is just a large washer that forms a good seal on the filter but not around the bolt. So it included another smaller washer below that which covers the bolt gap quite well (this would be #10). In between #10 and #12 is a oring that fits inside the #12 washer and forms a decentish tightish seal to the bolt shaft and somewhat on the inner edge of the washer. it is not perfect but the thing has two filters on it. The other one is the canister style that is the filter and housing in one.

Do you think my above setup will work? I mean it has been running with that gunky crap for years, this is huge improvement. I know there is a slight chance for particles to get by between the bolt and the washers, but could be cough by the other filter. I am 100% but I think this one is the primary and the other is the secondary.

I may be better served getting this thread moved to the mf section. Anyone know an admin or mod that could help with this?

How's that? ;)

I left an expiring re-direct for 2 months in the original location for good measure. :)

Re: Fuel system woes

My guess it will work. I patched corrosion holes in the bottom of my oil filled air filter canister years ago with JB weld and it is still holding. You may have considered putting a fine wire mesh behind the JB weld, but it will probably work as is. As far as the other things go, if it doesn't leak, whatever you did is just fine too. Your canister isn't under a very high pressure, so I'd give it a try, and try something else if you do have a leak. Wouldn't be the first time a diesel tractor had a leak :) .

With all due respect, Finn1, I am not a big fan of doing whatever you can to save "time". If you are that busy and in that much of a hurry, you probably should re-evaluate your priorities. I think one of the major problems in our society is that we are often too focused on saving time.
