I have a large generac generator with a 955 cc engine. I had a no start condition and traced it to the fuel shutoff solenoid. I pulled the plunger and it started without an issue. putting 12 volts to the solenoid does not open it as it should. Unfortunately when I pulled the plunger the spring went flying I believe somewhere is Mississipi....I live in Kansas. My questions:

Do I need a fuel shutoff solenoid or is this just emissions stuff? My research says that it is primarily to prevent backfire/afterfire.

I can get just the solenoid for 30 but a whole carb including the spring is 110. Or just running it without the plunger is free!

Any thoughts are appreciated.

In many situations the shut off is part of your fail-safe features. Low oil, ect. So, just know you are swinging with no safety net.

I figure the safety stuff would kill the ignition as well. I would definitely check it to see though. So it runs on gasoline? If so the shut off will stop the fuel flow if it started to diesel, which is harmful to the internals.

I think I saw that spring as it flew by! ;)
