I have an old Sears 18 Hp B&S twin cylinder garden tractor. It has the old style rectangular metal pulse fuel pump. Is is no longer made and I cant find an equal listed an where . Can anyone recommend something that might work. I bought a new tractor, but would love to get this beast running to do the dirty work and save the new unit. Napa wanted $45 for something that might work.

Thoughts?

Where have you checked? If you haven't tried sears parts.com try them.

Sears parts just says no longer available and does not indicate a replacement - thus the post. I have searched the part number too, with no results - no longer made, and no recommended replacement. Even the B&S site is no help. They do show an expensive rebuild kit, but not in stock.

So I am looking for the shade tree replacement - what might work. It is a three prong unit. an IN/OUT with a hose for the pulse.

BTW I did pull the unit off and open it up. No visible damage, cleaned, but it still does not pump fuel.

A lot of lawn mowers and outboard motors use the 3 line pumps. Just google pulse fuel pumps and kind match the size. You can mount them just about anywhere on the engine. Before you buy one check your crank case pressure, could have a bad shaft seal.

Thanks - That pump just might work.

Be aware that there are Mikuni pumps, and "Mikuni-like" Chinese pumps that are cheaper. I don't know how well the Chinese copies hold up.

An alternative might be a used pump off an older OMC (Johnson, Evinrude, Gale) outboard.

Or maybe try gravity-feed from an elevated fuel tank, but you will need to get the tank up a couple feet or more higher than the engine to get the head pressure necessary.

I don't think they well work. They bolt right on the engine with no way of putting a barb fitting in the hole that picks up crankcase pressure.

You could go to a snowmobile bone yard and get one to try.

Well that fuel pump is an integral part of the carb. Are you sure it is connected correctly, vacuum line connects to bottom, fuel inlet on the side. You had it apart, there are two little bitty springs in there that must go back in the right place. vacuum line is good? I found rebuild kits at Stens and Maple Grove Supply for less than $10. Complete separate pumps for $10. Virtually any used fuel pump from a blown B&S will work and connect to the vacuum port already in the crankcase. A gas tank mounted above the level of the carb will eliminate the need for a fuel pump.
